As with any sport, each game has its rules. These rules give structure and guidelines around which to base decisions, ensure a fair process among players and gives an equal opportunity for all players to play. Norms for collaborative work are the rules of the game for working together with colleagues. As it has been mentioned many times before, only by working together will you be able to achieve true improvement for your school.
There are many ways to set your team's norms for collaborative work. It may happen naturally. It may take more concentrated and direct planning by learning from experience and adjusting, or they may come from a provided list of norms that the team discusses and agrees upon. The main goal of setting norms for collaborative work is that everyone understands and agrees to use them as a way to ensure a constructive working environment, where team members:
Successfully work together around data
Feel safe that data will not be use as a means of punishment
Feel supported in learning new knowledge and developing new skills
Remember, the main thing is for everyone to explicitly accept and adhere to the norms. At first they may seem forced or awkward, but with time they can become something that everyone says, 'this is how we do things around here'! It is also important that by accepting these norms for collaborative work team members understand that they are allowed to 'keep each other in check', by reminding colleagues to adhere to the norms, not in a reprimanding way, but in a way that will help everyone work together and succeed.
