Google Read and Write

Google's powerful read and write toolbar helps with text-speech dictation, read aloud and other cool features and embedded tools to help students gain more accessibility and independence in the classroom. Students can install the free version of this powerful tool that has read aloud functions, speech to text, predictive text and snapshot web readers meaning that anything in the web can be read aloud (even embedded texts). Read and write can produce dictionary definitions for helping create annotated vocabulary lists that auto-generate images and visuals to make learning new words easier.

Additionally, Google Docs has speech to text and read aloud functions now built in. Adobe PDF reader also has read aloud .

Grammerly

Students can register for this free resource. Text from essays can be cut and paste into grammarly and used to check for correct sentence structure, punctuation and so on. It also offers alternative wording and other tools.

Newsela

This free to use electronic collection of current events and theme based articles provides short passages that users can select a preferred lexile level and have the text adapt to their reading level. To check comprehension, a quiz and quickwrite prompt are included for each article and can help track progress.

Bookshare

This is an online library offering a huge selection of books for young readers that are adaptive. Texts can be read in audio, large font, differing fonts that may be preferable to students with dyslexia and with backgrounds that offer a preferred contrast. Proof of disability may be required in order to register.

El Dorado High Library

Many resources here. Students can log in with their school credentials and register for the “destiny discovered” app that they can download onto their phones. This gives access to thousands of e-books that can be checked out. Some with read aloud function.
