Learning Center supports students that need additional support in their academic classes in High School. Students get help from the teacher, instructional aides and peers each day. The classroom is stocked with chromebooks, textbooks for all subjects across the school and school supplies. Students get an opportunity to get a head start on homework and prepare for the upcoming day.
The following supports available to students with IEPs:
Learning Center:
On a student’s mandatory day they should be following their schedule and attending Learning Center to receive check ins, guidance and tutoring in their classes. Where there is a concurrent Study Hall, students should attend Learning Center first before requesting a release to another teacher.
On non-mandatory days students are still expected to check in with Mr Plewa prior to attending study halls so that in the event that they have a C or lower in a class, a plan can be made to remediate their grade.
Mandatory Mondays:
If a student is required to attend on a Monday it is because they have one or more grades at 70% or lower. In this case they should be checking in with Mr Plewa at the start of the school day before attending other classes so that there is an awareness of what priority tasks take care of that week.
Attendance 5 days a week:
Students that attend 5 days a week are welcome to attend the learning center for extra support at any time outside of their mandatory classes. This is strongly encouraged to become a successful student at PCA and a particular advantage for those in 9 and 10th grade that need extra support to ensure that they do not fall behind in graduation requirement classes.
Math Support:
An Algebra Prep class meets on 4th block Monday and 2nd block Tuesday. Mr. Plewa and Mrs. Garmers teach this class to prepare students for Algebra 1 in the spring. Current Geometry students have also been invited into this setting to receive extra help with their homework and classwork.
Technology:
It is recommended that students do not take their own personal laptops or devices to school as these can cause a distraction to their studies. It also carries a risk of damage or loss during transportation back and forth.
Students must write up their grades and a to do list for the week then submit their tracker at the end of the week including a short reflection on what went well and what they need help with for the following week.
Throughout their time in high school students will work on transition assignments to prepare them for post secondary education, employment and independent living.
