Reading Curriculum

Reading Basics: System 44/Read 180

This blended learning curriculum, focuses on 4 classroom rotations:

  • Whole Group Instruction - Each class starts with a warm up to reinforce skills previously learned or to tap into background knowledge that will help in the lesson.
  • Small Group Instruction - Students are grouped by ability to work on skills specific areas that have been identified for remediation. In some cases this is English Language Arts skills applicable to the 9th grade level. In other cases it may be re-teaching of phonics skills that are yet to be mastered and have been identified for targeting in a small group.
  • Read 180 or System 44 Application - A computer based station where the student works through an adaptive program that works on core skills and targets skill deficits.
  • Independent Reading - from a lexile-levelled library where students read books carefully selected to be at their own level and aligned to skills they are practicing in their small group instruction.

Careers English: School to Career by Power Basics

Work in this class helps students become aware of careers interests and pathways while preparing them for success in the workplace.

Student primarily work from a comprehensive text, stopping to do individual and group activities and worksheets. A sample of the material is available here.

  • On-level content with a lower reading level make learning accessible to all students. The program features extensive practice and review and frequent opportunities for assessment.
  • Practical books help students transition from school to career. Students learn how to identify their own interests and abilities and then use that information to secure the right job. Lessons address important school-to-career skills including communicating at work, getting along with coworkers, meeting challenges, and getting ahead at work.

Practical English: Be a Better Reader

  • Sequenced Material from be a better reader includes lessons in phonics, decoding skills, reading strategies and comprehension to build reading fluency.
  • The class also uses novel studies to encourage participation and studies in literature.
  • Students with skill specific deficits such as spelling, phonics may also receive supplemental curriculum such as SRA Corrective Spelling, SRA Corrective writing and SRA Corrective Reading.
  • Students are measured with DIBELS 8th Edition on Reading metrics for beginning, middle and end of year.
  • The class also teaches and uses technology to support students with reading and writing in other classes such as use of google classroom tools, immersive screen readers, read aloud and dictation software and dyslexia specific supports for improving contrast and background.
  • Students have access to the class lexile levelled library in order to read books that are high interest and at their reading level.
