What is DIBELS 8th Edition?
Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills 8th Edition from the University of Oregon is a comprehensive series of reading tests that provide robust measurements by grade level for benchmarking and progress monitoring. Students are measured at the beginning, middle and end of year for progress in these reading metrics and placed within core, strategic or intervention groups for targeted remediation within a remedial reading program. This information can then be shared with the IEP team to set and report on annual reading goals. These short tests assess whether a student has mastered decoding, phonics and word reading skills taught in grades 1-3 and continue to measure oral fluency and comprehension through 8th grade.

Students are measured against core, strategic and intensive benchmarks to chart their progress through the grade levels. Results drive targeted remediation in small groups to maximize gains over the term.

- LNF - Letter Naming Fluency (Number of correct long and short letter sounds in 60 seconds. A Test of alphabet recognition.)
- PSF - Phonemic Segmentation Fluency (Number of correctly identified syllables in a word as heard by the student in 60 seconds. A test of letter-sound representation)
- NWF- Nonsense Word Fluency (Number of correct sounds "NWS" and correct words "NWF" for made up CVC, CVCe and longer words in 60 seconds. A test of decoding and phonics skills)
- WRF - Word Reading Fluency (Number of correct words read in 60 seconds. A test of sight words and decoding skills for words that should be known by end of grades 1, 2 and 3.)
- DOLCH and FRY High Frequency Word Lists (Optional tests for sight words and high frequency words). Students that can read these words automatically on sight will become more fluent readers.
- ORF - Oral Reading Fluency (Grade Level Passage read aloud scored by number of correct words per minute, accuracy and a 1-4 scaled grade for prosody (the rhythm, expression and attention to punctuation in the reader's voice).
- MAZE - Silent Reading Comprehension (A grade level passage where every sentence has a blank with three options for the student to choose the correct missing word. A 3 minute test of reading comprehension. The more fluent the reader the farther through the passage and the higher number correct they will score.
Taken altogether, these tests when done 3 times a year provide an accurate measure of a student's reading and help the teacher chart the course for remediation, differentiated instruction and ultimately progress.
