A walk box, or pacing box, is a space in the classroom where students can move (walk/ pace) while learning/ listening to classroom instruction. You can create a walk box/ pacing box by placing floor tape in an area of your classroom that is still part of the group - where students can see and hear group instruction.
As with any novel tool or activity you introduce in the classroom, ensure to explicitly teach and review how your students can use the walk box and what the specific rules are. All students should get the opportunity to try it.
Rules that classrooms have found useful include (see below for visual):
only 1 person at a time
need to be moving when in the walk box
no talking (but still encouraged to participate in group discussions)
Post/ share with students to support use of the walk box - adapt as needed
