Teaching students to size their letters appropriately using interlined paper initially.
(use phrases to represent letters sizes)
For neat printing, we need to size our letters appropriately. During all printing tasks, please encourage your students to print using sticky letters and now encourage proper letter sizing. After they have finished a printing task, have them check their work and fix any mistakes. It is harder for students to find sizing errors as opposed to baseline errors, therefore help the child edit their work in the beginning.
Use interline paper as it provides a visual of how big to make letters. Teach the lines (i.e. top line, middle or dotted line, and bottom line)
Always try and match the size of the interline to the size of the student’s printing. Avoid getting them to print smaller or larger based on the size of the interline.
When switching to regular lined paper, teach them how to size their letters on it. For example teach that short letters start halfway between the lines.
Encourage quality (neatness) over quantity to avoid students rushing. As printing neatly becomes more automatic, their speed should improve.
