Have students "show" answers to questions during lessons
Crouch on the ground if you think the answer is A, hop once if you think it is B
Hop X times according to the answer to a math problem
Provide clipboards and space copying or guided-drawing materials around the classroom to make a treasure hunt
Have students throw a large die and run to retrieve it to determine how many manipulatives to use, which number on a worksheet to start with, which letter to draw etc.
During multi-step activities, gauge progress by having students do ten jumping jacks once they complete each step
Use repetitive actions and gestures to aid with memory (Jolly phonics, storytelling, sequencing etc.)
Associate parts of the day with particular movements: do lunges on the way to the water fountain, bunny hop to the pencil sharpener, do pilates before lunch, tip-toe when handing in assignments
Toss a soft ball around the room to take turns with reading aloud, spelling words or answering questions
Allowing for rocking, standing or swivelling during seated work or instruction can improve attention, focus and sitting tolerance. Try:
Standing desk
Balance board
Chair bouncers
Theraband wrapped around desk or chair to kick
Wiggle cushions
Howda-Hug chairs
Rocking Chairs
Foot figets (tapping buttons, inflatable foot cushions, foot rollers, foot swings) Try: https://www.therapyshoppe.com for inspiration OR just fill a sock with rice or beans for feet to squish while sitting.
