Learning to Learn Program
As Year 6 students begin their final year at Aitken Creek Primary School, we are thrilled to embark on this journey together. In the first few weeks, we focused on establishing class agreements and iPad usage guidelines, ensuring a positive and productive learning environment.
We explored our school's core values: Respect, Teamwork, Achievement, and Responsibility. Through discussions and activities, we learned how these values guide our actions and interactions, fostering a supportive and collaborative classroom community.
In our learning, we engaged in activities that promoted teamwork and accountability, encouraging us to work cooperatively and take responsibility for our actions. We also discussed the importance of respect and achievement, setting goals and celebrating our successes.
Looking ahead, we plan to delve deeper into our expectations, ensuring that we are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Starting in Week 4, we will commence our comprehensive learning curriculum, designed to engage us and promote a love for lifelong learning.

Year 6 Blog Leaders
The Year 6 students have been actively contributing to the Year 6 blog, taking on leadership roles as blog leaders. By managing and creating content, they are showing initiative, responsibility, and a strong work ethic. They consistently gather feedback, ensure they meet deadlines, and demonstrate accountability by arriving on time.
Their involvement in the blog not only showcases their creativity and communication skills but also reflects their ability to take on leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to the classroom community. This platform allows parents to experience their children's learning journey from their own perspective, highlighting the importance of student voice in shaping and sharing their educational experiences.
It offers a unique glimpse into how students view and reflect on their progress, making their learning both visible and personal.
In numeracy, we’ve been learning some cool things lately! Right now, we’re focusing on factors and multiples. We’re learning what factors and multiples are and how they help us solve problems.
We’ve also been learning about shapes and transformations. This means looking at how shapes can flip, turn, or slide. It’s fun to see how shapes change when we move them in different ways.
We’ve been doing a lot of pretests on Essential Assessment, which help us see what we know and what we might need to practice more.
Reminder to all students and parents! It’s really important to spend at least 10 minutes a day on My Numeracy. It’s a great way to practice what we’ve learned and keep improving.

For the first term in year 6 sport students have had a chance to try different sports with their classmates. Every class has been trying different sports with their classes. The sports change every week to give students a chance to find the sport that they enjoy playing.
Different sports teach students how to achieve their goal and be more competitive. Different sports also provide students with different perspectives.
The sports we will be playing this term include Basketball, Kickball, Teeball, Volleyball and Cricket.

These past few weeks, we have been exploring woman’s rights and what life was like back in the 1800’s. We learnt about how women were treated differently and how they couldn’t do daily task. E.g: could not go to school, not vote and had many different laws compared to the men.
Two women, Mary Lee and Mary Cotton, changed history for all us girls and woman.

Welcome to this week's literacy session! We started doing literacy groups back in week 5. What is a literacy group? In a literacy group, you are placed in a group based on your reading level. There are different literacy groups, each containing around 5 to 6 people. You are given an appropriate chapter book by Ms. Omi. Once a week, your group gathers together to work on the literacy tasks.
Every student is given a role. Some of the roles include Word Wizard, Connection Maker, Summarizer, Character Analyzer, Scene Setter, and more. You work on these roles for at least 1 to 2 weeks. That’s it for the literacy groups; now let’s see what’s going on in reading.
In reading, we have also been doing phonics, which can help improve your vocabulary. The word for this week is "spire." For example, some words derived from "spire" are inspire, conspire, and aspire. After phonics, we do 20 minutes of independent reading. In independent reading, you can either read on Epic, which is an app appropriate for kids, or you can grab a book from the class library.
For the reading task, we have been identifying and writing figurative language. We write sentences that include personification, metaphors, similes, and more. We are given short paragraphs, and we have to highlight the figurative language within them.
Phonics:
For reading/ phonics these couple of days we have been learning about the word spire and how many words have it in their root or suffix. E.g : inspire= to give another person an idea based of your idea.
Our task was to find words with the root spire and find the meaning. We used a pokeball template.

This week in CBL us year 6’s have been learning about the difference between rules and laws. We came up with different types of rules for the classroom by making posters and presenting them in front of the class. We are going to have a vote and choose which rule we want to keep.

The Year 6 students recently had an assembly presentation. They took the initiative to create their own role plays around common school problems, such as conflicts with friends or feeling left out, and showcased the importance of making thoughtful choices.
A key focus was the Stop, Walk, Talk strategy, where students learned to pause, take a step back, and talk through issues to resolve them calmly and responsibly. Their creativity and ownership of the project were truly inspiring, and their performances were both insightful and entertaining.
This assembly was a wonderful display of their problem-solving skills and maturity. They demonstrated leadership and handled challenges with confidence. They should be incredibly proud of themselves!
