3 way conferences
Towards the end of this term, we will conduct 3 way conferences. These conferences are an opportunity for your child to celebrate their achievements throughout this semester and to develop reflective goals for future learning. They will be conducted via Webex, so it will be a student free day. More information will come out on Compass shortly.
The students will be planning their presentations over the next two weeks, so it is very important that they come to school with a fully charged Ipad every day.
Arriving at School
We’ve recently noticed that a number of our Year 6 students are arriving early in the morning, dropping their bags at school, and then leaving the grounds to visit the milk bar across the road. While we understand the appeal of a morning treat, we’d like to remind families that once students arrive at school, they are expected to remain on the school grounds for their safety and supervision. If visiting the milk bar is part of your morning routine, we kindly ask that this be done before students are dropped off at school. Additionally, we remind students and families that lollies are not to be consumed at school, including during recess and lunch. We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a safe and focused learning environment.
Digital Technology
We encourage families to take an active role in regularly checking their child’s iPad and having open conversations about safe and responsible technology use. VPN’s are not applications that we support students using and are not necessary for any school-related activity, you may want to discuss this with your child and delete VPN’s if they have them on their ipads. If your child is using social media, it’s a great opportunity to discuss how to engage responsibly online, including respecting others, protecting personal information, and setting healthy boundaries. Being aware of your child’s online activity helps reinforce the positive digital habits we promote at school and ensures a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
Building Independence
As our Year 6 students move through their final year of primary school, we are placing a strong focus on building their independence in preparation for the transition to secondary school. Developing independent habits now will help students feel more confident and capable when faced with the new routines and expectations of high school. Families can support this growth by encouraging children to take responsibility for packing their own school bags, managing their homework schedules, and keeping track of important dates or deadlines. Supporting your child to problem-solve before seeking adult help and gradually giving them more responsibility at home—such as preparing lunch or setting an alarm in the morning—can also build valuable self-management skills. These small steps help lay the foundation for a successful and smooth transition into the next stage of their schooling journey.
Specialist Classes
Each week the students attend Performing Arts, Physical Education, Spanish and Visual Arts. To find out what the students have been up to in their specialist classes please check out the blog.
Homework/Home Learning
Students have recently completed a round of assessments and have many new homework activities specifically linked to their individualised learning goals. Home learning is an important part of a child’s education, where they get to share their understanding of things they learn in the classroom with you at home, and practise important skills to consolidate their learning. Individual Education Plans have been developed and sent home for Term 2, these also list other ways in which you can support your child at home to consolidate what we do in the classroom. Please encourage your child to complete their homework each night and reach out to your child’s teacher if you are unable to access the home learning online.
Expectations remain as follows:
20 minutes of independent reading (recorded in the ACPS home reading log)
10 minutes of My Literacy
10 minutes of My Numeracy
Attendance
Attending school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind. We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.
Sometimes there are reasons why your child is unable to come to school. If your child is absent please ensure that you promptly notify the school. This can be done through Compass, calling the office or sending a note with your child on their return to school. If you do not have access to Compass please contact the office and they can provide you with your login details.
Mobile Phones
As you may be aware there is an ACPS Mobile Phone Policy in place that is a requirement of all schools. We understand that some students may bring a personal mobile to school, particularly if they are travelling independently to and from school. Where emergencies occur, parents or carers must only reach their child by calling the school's office.
When students bring a mobile phone to school, they are required to hand their device into the school administration office at the beginning of the day, where it will be placed in lockable storage. Students will then need to collect their phone at the end of the school day, when they are dismissed from class. Students should not have mobile phones in the classroom or out in the yard.
Have a great weekend!

Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you for your ongoing support as we settle into another exciting school year. The Year 6 students have embraced new challenges with curiosity and enthusiasm, particularly as they begin to explore the concept of history—how things change over time and how the past shapes the present. Through our learning, students have been developing a deeper understanding of the world around them, drawing connections between historical events and their lasting impact. It has been wonderful to see their growing appreciation for different perspectives and the ways in which societies evolve. Alongside this, students have also enjoyed strengthening friendships, engaging in Year 6 sports, and celebrating key events such as Harmony Day.
In Literacy, students have been exploring the historical fiction genre, learning how to weave real historical events and settings into engaging narratives. They have been focusing on developing strong characters and vivid descriptions while ensuring historical accuracy in their writing. In Reading, they have been refining their comprehension skills, particularly summarising key information and making connections between texts and historical contexts.
In Numeracy, we have been working on concepts related to length, perimeter, and area. Students have been applying their understanding to real-world contexts, solving problems involving composite shapes and converting between different units of measurement. They have also explored strategies for calculating perimeter and area efficiently, strengthening their mathematical reasoning skills.
Our CBL (Challenge-Based Learning) unit this term is centered around the theme of Change. Students have been investigating historical and societal changes, considering their impacts and how they shape the world we live in today. They are now working on projects that showcase their understanding, which will be presented to the class this week.

Home Learning:
Home Learning is beginning in term 1. Please ensure your child is completing the allocated homework each night and reaches out to their classroom teacher if they have any questions or difficulties. Getting into a good habit of completing homework each night will be beneficial for your child in secondary school, as their learning will be more self directed.
Just a reminder, home learning this year is as follows:
- 20 minutes of reading (please ensure your child fills in the reading log that has been sent home)
- 10 minutes of My Numeracy (tasks have already been set, students can complete them at their own pace)
- 10 minutes of Reading Eggs (this can look like going through the map or reading a book from Reading Eggspress and completing the quiz afterwards or completing a lesson on Reading Eggs - Spelling)
Things not to bring to school:
There are certain things that are not allowed at school. Those things include soccer cleats, chewing gum, soft drinks and Smart watches. Smart watches fall under the same umbrella as mobile phones and therefore are not allowed at school. Please ensure that you have a discussion with your child about these expectations and that these items are not brought into school.
Technology:
Every student signed an iPad & technology agreement that outlines the expectations of being IT safe at school. The document outlines the expectations for safe IT use in the classroom, which includes but is not limited to:
- Only use of school approved apps are to be used during class time
- Communication through iPads such as imessages are not allowed during school hours
- No photography or video is allowed to be taken on the iPads of students
- iPads are only allowed to be used during class time when directed by a teacher to do so
If students are breaching the expectations, the expectations will be discussed with the students, and if the behaviours are repeated, the students may lose the privilege of technology use in the classroom for a period of time. Please have discussions with your child about safe use of technology.
Mobile Phones:
As you may be aware there is an ACPS Mobile Phone Policy in place that is a requirement of all schools. We understand that some students may bring a personal mobile or smart watch to school, particularly if they are travelling independently to and from school. Where emergencies occur, parents or carers must only reach their child by calling the school's office.
When students bring a mobile phone or smart watch (with the ability to recieve calls or messages) to school, they are required to hand their device into the school administration office at the beginning of the day, where it will be placed in lockable storage. Students will then need to collect their phone at the end of the school day, when they are dismissed from class. Students should not have mobile phones in the classroom or out in the yard.
Attendance:
If your child is absent please ensure that you promptly notify the school. This can be done through Compass, calling the office or sending a note with your child on their return to school. If you do not have access to Compass please contact the office and they can provide you with your login details. If your child has brought home a note with absent days, please ensure you fill it in and return it to school as soon as possible. If you are unsure which days your child was absent without a note on Compass, please reach out to your child’s teacher and they can let you know.

Beginning in week 4, we will jump into regular curriculum work.
In literacy, students will be reading, reflecting and discussing in literature circles using books of their choice. They will also read independently and set goals for their reading. In writing, the students are researching a historical figure or event and write a historical fiction piece.
In Maths, students will be exploring different types of number. They will also be learning about the transformation and tesselation of shapes.
The students will begin the Challenge Based Learning journey next week with an exploration around what the unit will be about, so I will give more information in my next newsletter.

Students will then need to collect their phone at the end of the school day, when they are dismissed from class. Students should not have mobile phones in the classroom or out in the yard.
Have a great weekend!
