READING
This term in Reading, students explored a range of information and multimodal texts to strengthen their understanding of nonfiction features and comprehension strategies. Students identified features such as headings, captions, diagrams, maps, and images, while practising summarising, comparing perspectives, and analysing how visuals and audio help communicate meaning. Through mentor texts, documentaries, and discussions, students developed their ability to think critically about author purpose, audience, and message.
WRITING
This term in Writing, students developed their informative writing skills by researching, planning, and publishing their own information texts. Students practised organising information using headings and subheadings, taking notes, and writing clear factual sentences. Students also transformed their writing into multimodal presentations using tools such as iMovie, Canva, and PowerPoint, incorporating visuals, narration, and layout to communicate information effectively. We are incredibly proud of the creativity and confidence students demonstrated throughout this unit.
Numeracy
This term in Mathematics, students explored fractions, decimals, and 3D geometry through hands-on fluency activities, rich tasks, investigations, and design challenges. Students practised comparing and ordering fractions, finding equivalent fractions, converting improper fractions into mixed numbers, and representing fractions using area models and number lines. Students also developed their understanding of decimals and place value through collaborative problem-solving tasks. In Geometry, students investigated the features and properties of 3D objects, including faces, edges, vertices, prisms, pyramids, and nets, and designed their own packaging nets to strengthen spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills.
CBL
This term in CBL, students began exploring our new Geography unit through provocations, discussions, mapping activities, and inquiry tasks connected to the question, “What is our place in the world?” Students investigated how people, environments, countries, and cultures are connected, while learning about continents, hemispheres, landmarks, imports and exports, and global connections. Through KWL charts, collaborative discussions, mapping tasks, and food origin investigations, students developed their questioning, research, and critical thinking skills while building an understanding of how geography influences everyday life.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, students have been developing their understanding of decimals and exploring numbers up to the thousandths place. Using tools such as decimats, MAB blocks, and place value charts, students represented and modelled decimals to strengthen their understanding of place value. Students have practised writing decimals in decimal form, placing thousandths on number lines, and comparing and ordering numbers with up to three decimal places. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, students have continued to build confidence in using mathematical language and reasoning to explain their thinking.
Literacy
In Reading, Year 5 students have been developing their comprehension skills by exploring information texts and The Rabbits. They practised making inferences using clues from both words and illustrations, and learned to support their thinking with evidence. Students also discussed themes and author's messages, building their ability to think critically and make deeper connections with texts.
In Writing, Year 5 students have been creating information texts by researching topics, organising information under subheadings, and writing clear introductions and body paragraphs. They have focused on using topic-specific vocabulary, facts, and explanations to inform their readers. Students also revised and edited their work before transforming their information texts into engaging multimodal presentations using images, narration, and other digital features.
CBL
In Challenge Based Learning, Year 5 students explored how environments, natural disasters, and cultures shape the way people live around the world. They compared different countries, investigated environmental influences, and examined how people adapt to their surroundings. Students also developed their intercultural understanding by learning about traditions, values, and perspectives from different cultures. To conclude the unit, students collaborated in teams to research sustainability practices and present their ideas at a World Sustainability Summit role-play.
