Foundation Home Learning

Expectations

Welcome to the Foundation Home Learning page. This is where you will find all the information and resources you need to support your child with their Home Learning.

We encourage Home Learning to be completed three nights a week (in addition to nightly reading) as this will support your child's learning in the classroom. We see every interaction and experience as a learning opportunity to support our students in developing their skills and capacity across all areas of this most important developmental stage. This is an opportunity for you to be involved in this important home-school partnership.

Home Learning tasks are designed to support students in retrieving prior learning. Please see your classroom teacher if you have any further queries.

Phonics (Literacy)

At Templestowe Heights Primary School our philosophy for literacy is linked to evidence-based methods to ensure that all students succeed and flourish in the fundamental skills of Reading and Writing. Please watch our instructional videos found below, for guidance.

In following the Science of Learning when it comes to literacy instruction, the Foundation team at THPS are developing a systematic focus on synthetic phonics. The pillars of Literacy that guide our practice are:

  1. Phonemic Awareness (learning and manipulating the sounds in spoken words)

  2. Phonics (recognising the relationship between written and spoken letters and sounds)

  3. Word Knowledge (high frequency words and recognition of irregular words)

  4. Fluency (the ability to read aloud with speed, accuracy and the appropriate expression)

  5. Vocabulary (understanding words, their definitions and their context)

  6. Comprehension (learning to understand the meaning of different texts)

Students need explicit instruction and opportunities to interact with all of these key areas. Providing these at home, in addition to school, will give your child the best chance for success. This might include activities that involve:

  • Spelling (blending and segmenting words, spelling rules)

  • Reading (decodable texts suitable for your child to read and exposure to a wide variety of books read with a family member)

  • Vocabulary (providing essential background knowledge for reading and writing and with the intention of improving comprehension)

  • Writing (letter formation, grammar - knowledge of creating a sentence)
