MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
What an amazing few weeks it has been at Sherbourne! The energy around the school has been incredible, and it’s been wonderful to see our students so engaged in such a wide range of activities and learning experiences.
Our Bike Education and Swimming Program have now wrapped up for the year, both of which were a great success. Students showed persistence, teamwork, and growth. It’s always rewarding to see how much confidence they gain through these programs. We also celebrated Digital Citizenship Week, where students explored online safety and learned valuable strategies to help them make smart and safe choices online.
Our partnership with the Indie School continues to be such a highlight. Each week, their students have been working alongside our Grade 3–4s to build Billy Carts for the upcoming Billy Cart Derby Day. It has been fantastic watching these young adults guide and support our students, teaching them teamwork, safety and how to use tools responsibly.
The Student-Led Conferences were another proud moment for our school. Hearing students reflect on their learning and share their achievements so confidently was a real celebration of their growth and effort throughout the year.
Camp was an absolute hit! Three days of fun, adventure, and new experiences. Our students represented Sherbourne with pride and enthusiasm. It was heartwarming to see so many of them step outside their comfort zones, tackling challenges like the giant swing and flying fox with courage and ending up loving every minute of it.
Our Prep and Grade 1/2 Breakfast in Pyjamas was another highlight. Students made their own breakfast, brushed their teeth, and even washed their dishes! It was a great way to help them build independence and resilience. A wonderful pre-camp experience as they begin to develop those life skills for future adventures in Grade 3 and beyond.
We were also extremely proud of our Grade 5–6 students who represented Sherbourne at the Remembrance Day Service at the Montmorency-Eltham RSL. They did a fantastic job presenting and laying the wreath on behalf of our school. Back at school, our Prep–4 students also took part in learning activities about the significance of Remembrance Day and created a beautiful poppy wreath now displayed in the school.
This week we are excited to welcome our new Preps for their very first transition session. Such an exciting milestone for our future Sherbourne students and their families.
Looking ahead, there’s still so much more to come! Teachers are busily preparing reports and student data, as well as planning for next year’s programs. The Grade 6s are preparing for their graduation and high school orientation day, while all students will take part in our Step-Up Session in December to spend time with their 2026 teacher. Of course, we’re all looking forward to our Billy Cart Derby Day, always one of the biggest and most joyful days on the Sherbourne calendar.
In addition, our End of year Celebration/Christmas Concert preparation is well under way. Each class has begun practicing their Christmas songs and getting ready to hit the stage for you all. See below for more information. An event not to miss as it will be a great way to get together as a school community and celebrate a wonderful year together.
As we move into the final stretch of the term, it’s clear that this time of year is full of excitement, celebration, and reflection. We’re so proud of everything our students have achieved and can’t wait to finish the year on a high together.
Warm regards,
Brett Hayes

Remembrance Day Service
Today our Grade 5/6 students attended the Montmorency–Eltham RSL Remembrance Day Service, joining our local community in honouring and remembering those who have served our country. We are incredibly proud of Elin and Roman, who represented Sherbourne Primary School by delivering the Acknowledgment of Service with confidence and maturity. Their calm, thoughtful presentation reflected the significance of the occasion beautifully.
Additionally, Gemma and Sofia respectfully laid the wreath on behalf of our school, paying tribute to Australian service men and women, past and present.
Thank you to our students for representing Sherbourne with pride, respect, and empathy on this important day of remembrance. Lest we forget. 🌿
Back at school, our Prep–Year 4 students also took part in Remembrance Day learning activities. They explored the meaning behind the day, why we pause for a minute’s silence, and the symbolism of the poppy. Together, our whole school community contributed to creating a large paper poppy wreath, which will be proudly displayed at school as a reminder of remembrance, respect and peace.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT -
Grade 5/6 Poetry Writing
Over the past few weeks, our Grade 5/6 students have been exploring the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth. This iconic poem celebrates the beauty of nature and how special moments outdoors can uplift our mood and stay with us long after the moment has passed. Students learned about the historical context of the poem, the Romantic movement, and Wordsworth’s love of the natural world.
In reading sessions, students practised visualising, summarising, questioning and close reading to analyse how Wordsworth used simile, metaphor, personification and imagery to create powerful meaning. They then used this knowledge in writing lessons to craft their own “Beauty of Nature” poems, experimenting with descriptive vocabulary, figurative language and complex sentence structures.
I am so incredibly proud of the creativity and thoughtful expression students have shown throughout this unit. Please enjoy a selection of excerpts from their poems below🌿✨
IN THE SPOTLIGHT -
Prep/1/2 Pre Camping Experience
What a wonderful morning our Prep students had at their Breakfast in Our PJs! The children came to school in their pyjamas and enjoyed a fun-filled morning that included a music session with Bianca, making jelly, watching a movie, and some colourful face painting.
Students showed great teamwork, independence, and resilience. They were served like royalty by staff and the absolute highlight was washing their own dishes! They even brushed their teeth and got dressed for the day, just like a real camp experience.
It was such a joy to see how far our Prep/2 students have come since the start of the year. Their confidence, independence, and enthusiasm shone brightly, making this event a true highlight of the term and a wonderful pre-camp experience.
