MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Mr Hayes – Sherbourne Primary School
Dear Sherbourne Community,
What a wonderful month May has been at Sherbourne!
Firstly, Happy Mother’s Day to all our amazing Sherbourne mums and mother figures. We hope you enjoyed the special Mother’s Day Breakfast, complete with delicious scones and sweet treats. It was such a lovely morning with a beautiful atmosphere. A big thank you to BFSM for joining us and providing the music – your contribution added so much warmth to the celebration.
A huge congratulations to our students who represented Sherbourne at the District Cross Country on May 16th. Special shoutouts to:
Will (9/10) – 7th place
Olli (9/10) – 11th place
Ella (9/10) – 17th place
What an outstanding effort by all involved! It must have been all that extra training with Coach Sue paying off. Thank you also to Vic for your support marshalling on the day – events like these don’t run without our fantastic helpers.
At school, our teachers are currently finalising assessments and preparing reports, with a focus on recognising the incredible growth and progress our students have made across the semester. We look forward to sharing these achievements with families soon.
A very exciting milestone this term has been the finalisation of our school values. This has been a meaningful and collaborative process, helping us define who we are as a school community. Our newly confirmed values are:
Curiosity
Growth
Connect
Respect
We’re proud of how these values are already shining through in our students’ reflections, especially the importance many have placed on having their voices heard. We will be celebrating our new values with a Values Celebration Day in Term 3 – date to be confirmed soon!
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We look forward to another positive, connected, and inspiring month ahead at Sherbourne.
Warm regards,
Brett Hayes
Principal
EDUCATION WEEK
It was great to see everyone who came in to celebrate our love of reading and share in the joy of literature with your children for Education Week. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces and to feel the buzz of excitement in the classrooms.
Following our open morning, the whole school took part in National Simultaneous Storytime, joining over 2 million others across the country to enjoy this year’s chosen book 'The Truck Cat'. Afterwards, students engaged in a range of fun and creative activities inspired by the story.
What a fantastic way to celebrate the power of reading and the importance of storytelling in our learning!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT - GRADE 3/4
The grade 3/4's have been super busy with their 'First Fleet' unit of inquiry.
They have began setting up a wonderul display in the corridor of the classroom building, so when you are in next, come and have a look.
If you are a parent of a grade 3/4, ask them what they have been learning about. They are becoming historical experts.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
SCHOOL CROSSING SUPERVISOR
Hi, my name is Vicki Johnson; I am your school crossing supervisor, I would like to go over a few of the crossing rules with you.
Children should NEVER be dropped off anywhere within the yellow lined school crossing area during crossing control times (8:10am to 9:10am and 3:30pm to 4:00pm school days only)
NOR should any car STOP or PARK within the yellow lined area during these times
ALL THESE ACTS CAN & DO INCUR LOCAL COUNCIL FINES
No children or their parents should cross the road outside the correct crossing area.
Children and parents must always wait behind the yellow line until they hear the 2 whistles from the crossing supervisor in attendance
A single whistle is used, only in an emergency situation.
Children are never allowed to cross the road whilst riding bikes etc. And should only walk, NEVER RUN.
There is no better way to teach children good road etiquette than to always follow the rules ourselves. This should instil a good road sense; for not only the school crossing, but in all other situations for everyday use in their lives.
These are simple rules to protect “YOUR” children
“STOP, LOOK, LISTEN & THINK
HAVE A HAPPY & SAFE DAY 😊

It is important to celebrate and recognise such successes with the school community!
BIG SHOUT OUT to Will in garde 4, for his tremendous efforts representing our school at Division Cross Country. He came 26th in Division. What an amazing effort
SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE
It’s been another busy and exciting term at Sherbourne Primary School. Here are the latest updates from our recent School Council discussions:
BFSM at Sherbourne
We’re thrilled with how smoothly BFSM (Band Factory School of Music) have settled into our school. It truly feels like they’ve always been a part of the Sherbourne community. Their presence brings vibrancy and valuable music opportunities for our students.
Facilities Hire – Supporting Our School
Hiring out our facilities continues to be an important part of our school’s strategy to generate additional funds. These funds help us maintain and improve our school grounds and buildings, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for all.
School Camps – Confirmed for 2025–2028
We’re pleased to have locked in school camps for our Years 3–6 students for the next four years:
2025 – Portsea Camp (rescheduled to the last week of October)
2026 – Billabong Ranch
2027 – Woorabinda Camp
2026 – School Review Year
We’re also excited for our Grade 6 Darwin trip, scheduled for 9th–16th August, which promises to be a highlight of the year for our senior students.
Pool Update – Ready for Term 4!
We’re pleased to announce that our school pool is now full and clean once again! We’re looking forward to reopening it in Term 4. We’re excited to be partnering with Platypus Pond Swim School, who will be delivering our swimming program. This marks the beginning of what we hope will be a long and successful relationship.
Prep Familiarisation – May Success
One of the highlights of the May meeting was hearing about the success of our Prep Familiarisation Program, which ran over three weeks. Local kinder children had the opportunity to participate in Art, PE, and Music sessions, and it was wonderful to see so many families engaged.
This initiative is a vital stepping stone as we continue to strengthen our connection to local kinders and the community. We look forward to welcoming our 2026 Preps in Term 4 for their Prep Transition sessions.
Policy & Compliance
School Council remains focused on reviewing and updating key school policies, ensuring we meet all child safety standards and comply with the Department of Education’s minimum standards. Thank you to staff for their ongoing attention and planning in these areas.
Thank You
To our dedicated School Council members – thank you for your continued time, commitment, and care for our school. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a thoughtful and proactive team at Sherbourne Primary.
Warm regards,
Mr Brett Hayes
