Word Choice: Choosing words to deepen meaning

You can print the sheet and hand write the sentences or type them in a Google Doc and upload it to your weekly folder.

Writing: Word Choice

Choosing words that deepen meaning

Your task this week is very similar to a task that we've done previously. This week, you will be required to read some very simple sentences and then 'bump up the sentence' using words that deepen the meaning.

The short video on the left gives you an example of using more complex words to deepen meaning and provides you with some examples of where you can find more complex words.

Notice the example:
I pet the cat. He was soft.
This can be 'bumped up' to...
I gently pet the tabby cat. He was velvety.

This highlights that the cat is silky smooth and that the person patting the cat is showing extreme care. It also tells us the type of cat which gives the reader more information and deepens the meaning of the sentence.

vocabulary activity

This task is designed to introduce you to some words you may not have heard before, or if you have heard them, help you have a deeper understanding of them. This will expand your vocabulary and help you with your comprehension when you're reading and the quality of work you produce when you're writing.

Print and complete the activity to your left.

Extension: Once you have completed the first worksheet, you are to print the blank template and complete it using two Jolly Grammar words from the bottom 6 words of this weeks list words.

Challenge: See if you can include these words in this weeks or an upcoming writing task!

T4_W1_Lexie Alford breaks world record for youngest person to visit every country _ KidsNews.pdf

News Article

Article: "Lexie Alford saved up from the age of 12 to achieve her world-record dream of visiting every country on Earth"

Click on the link (above) to access the article or print it off using the attached PDF (left).

Read through the article and then answer the questions using full sentences at the bottom (found under "QUICK QUIZ") on some lined paper, in a spare workbook or in Google Docs.

Take the challenge!

Lexie has managed to visit 196 countries, while many of us would struggle to simply name them.

Individually, write a list of all the countries you can think of. (Don’t use an atlas, the internet or any other resource to help you.) How many can you name?

Next, compare and combine your list with the rest of your family. How close to 196 can you get?

If you have fallen short of 196, use an atlas or the internet to help you identify the ones you have missed.

Upload your results to your folder!

maths application- option 2

In the News Article activity this week, Lexie Alford started saving money from the age of 12 to be able to achieve the world record of being the youngest person (21 years old) to visit all 196 countries.

Task:

  1. Write down a list of all the things Lexie would have needed to pay for during one or more of these trips.

  2. Using your list, try to work out how much money Lexie would have needed to save up in total to visit all the countries on Earth. Show your working out and explain your answer(s)!

You might need to do a little bit of research and get some expert advice from the adults in your life.

Put those thinking caps on!
