Copy of The Hamburger Paragraph

Writing: Organisation

When writing an information or persuasive text, the body of a writing piece is made up of multiple paragraphs. A new paragraph should start when:

  • when you change time or place.

  • when something suddenly occurs.

  • when you wish to emphasize a dramatic event.

  • when you introduce a new speaker.

Watch the video and take a look at the 'hamburger paragraph' template on the left. As the video explains, each 'layer' of the hamburger represents a different part of the paragraph.

Your task this week is to create a topic sentence (either informative or persuasive) and use the hamburger template to structure a full paragraph. Some examples of a topic sentence are -

Persuasive: "There are many reasons why home learning is beneficial".
Informative: "Did you know that lions..."

Possessive and Sigular Nouns activity .pdf

grammar activity

This weeks Grammar concept is focusing on Singular and Plural Possessive Nouns.

The general rule is that the possessive of a singular noun is formed by adding an apostrophe and s, whether the singular noun ends in s or not.

The possessive of a plural noun is formed by adding only an apostrophe when the noun ends in s, and by adding both an apostrophe and s when it ends in a letter other than s.

Still unsure? Watch the video for some more information. When you're ready, complete the worksheet attached.

Boggle Worksheet (1).pdf

vocabulary activity

Choose 16 letters of your choice (make sure you do include some vowels, 'a,e,i,o,u') and add them into squares to create a Boggle Board.

Once you have your letters, use the lines provided to create as many words as you can!

Once you're finished, make sure you tally up each word to see how many points you got.

Have fun :)

T3_W2_Kids News_ Australian teenage children should learn cooking skills for health, says chef Stephanie Alexander _ KidsNews.pdf

News Article

Article: "Teenage kids need to learn how to cook to keep themselves healthy"

Click on the link (above) to access the article or print it off using the attached PDF (left).

Read through the article and then answer the questions at the bottom (found under "QUICK QUIZ") using full sentences on some lined paper, in a spare workbook or in Google Docs.

For those who like a challenge, have a look under "CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES", "VCOP ACTIVITY" or answer the "HAVE YOUR SAY" question.

Worded Problems - CUBES.pdf
CUBES strategy (1).pdf

Maths Application:

the cubes strategy

Hmm... Why are there so many words when we're doing Maths?!

A reason might be because Maths is EVERYWHERE - so you might get a question asking you how many apples your teacher ate that day, if they had 2 in the morning and another 10 in the afternoon. Normal teacher stuff.

Some questions might be simple to understand, while others are a little more tricky because they contain many, many words. To help you with answering these wordy questions, there is a strategy called "CUBES" which will help you find the most important information in the question.

View the first two documents to become familiar with the CUBES strategy, and have a go at answering the questions in the last document on the left.

Good luck!

essential assessment

This week you are to complete the following Pre-Tests. These are to be completed BY YOURSELF as they will directly effect the Point of Need sheets you complete later in the term.

Remember to check Essential Assessment everyday in case a new test has been set for you.

Tests to be completed:

Number and Algebra

  • Fractions and Decimals

Measurement and Geometry

  • Location and Transformation

Statistics and Probability

  • Chance

If you have finished all of your pre-tests, you can begin completing your 'My Numeracy'.

inquiry

Refer to and view last week's three to four minute video.

Focus on the three levels of Government:

Federal, State and Local.

What are the 5 areas that Local Government look after?

One area is the Collection of Garbage.

The Council provides us with special bins that are collected on a weekly basis.

Task

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+make+a+gabage+bin+out+of+a+milk+container

View the video above. From ideas gained make a garbage bin out of recycled materials. A plastic 2 litre milk container is good to commence with.

See what you can create.

Have fun.
