High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS) are used in each and every literacy and numeracy lesson I teach. The strategies I use most frequently include Setting Goals, Structuring Lessons, Explicit Teaching, Worked Examples, Collaborative Learning, Questioning, Feedback and Differentiation.
The table below shows the components of a lesson and the HITS used during each the part of the lesson.
Structuring Lessons
Gradual release of responsibility
I do, we do, you do (together), you do
Share and return to learning intention
Setting Goals
Explaining what they are learning and what success looks like each lesson. For example:
Learning Intention
- WALT identify interesting leads
Success Criteria
- I can list the techniques writers use to begin a story
- I can read books and identify the technique the writer has used to create their lead
Explicit Teaching
During launch
Focus group work - support and extend students as required
Questioning
During the launch of the lesson to prompt deeper thinking about the unit
Ask targeted questions to specific students to find out what they know or how they think
Worked Examples
Model during explicit teaching time
Model during guided instruction as required
Differentiated Teaching
Warm up
Task
Collaborative Learning
Students work in partners or groups to complete a task
Develop teamwork skills and build connections with and learn from their peers.
Feedback
Shows students how they can progress further
Provided throughout and at the conclusion of a lesson in structured and unstructured ways
Working with a small group allows me to give timely and specific feedback that I can observe students respond to
