Behavioural expectations are established from the first day of school.
I place extra time and effort into teaching these expectations throughout Term One.
A clear jar fills with pom poms as a reward for showing positive behaviour. As a class, we decide on a reward for when the jar is full—this might be a class party, extra play time, a special game, a movie afternoon, or even a class picnic.
Positive reinforcement: Focuses on and rewards the behaviours we want to see more of.
Team effort: Encourages cooperation, collective responsibility, and peer support.
Clear visual cue: Easy for students to track progress and stay motivated.
Engaging and fun: Builds a sense of excitement and shared achievement.
Regular praise for students making positive choices supports self-regulation and creates a classroom culture where kindness, encouragement, and teamwork are the norm.
As a class, we construct a Classroom Agreement at the beginning of the year.
Allowing students to develop and agree on their own rules increases agency and allows students to shape their learning environment for the year ahead.
The agreement is displayed in the classroom to remind students of agreed classroom expectations.
