It is with great pleasure that Central Highlands Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) welcomes our three new LINK schools as support for schools who are wanting to find out more about PLCs, wanting to refresh their practice or are moving their PLC practice from good to great. We have a diverse range of LINK schools to cater for all school types including smaller schools, rural and for diverse learners.
· Ballarat Specialist School
· Beaufort Secondary School, and
· Canadian Lead Primary School.
PLC leaders in these schools are available to work with your school leaders and/or teaching staff to support building knowledge and skills around the inquiry cycle, building teams, collaborative practices and using assessment. Ballarat Specialist School are also providing support for ABLEs and Early ABLEs, how to incorporate Disability Inclusion adjustments into planning and inquiries, IEPs and inclusion in VET/VCAL.
Supports can include visits and/or observations from LINK school leaders, opportunities for staff to undertake Learning Walks in LINK schools, and provision of resources such as agendas, protocols and assessments.
Schools are invited to have short or longer term partnerships with the LINK schools and can be made through contact through the PLC Manager – Paula Sprague. Paula.sprague@education.vic.gov.au

Last term Canadian Lead Primary School held their first open days and learning walks as part of the PLC LINK school support. Due to the success of these days in term 3 the school will be once again opening its doors and welcoming staff from schools in Week 8 on Wednesday the 28th of October. If you would like to see learning in action in both the classroom and PLCs please see the link below to complete to register your interest.
Thank you.
Please email Paula Sprague paula.sprague@education.vic.gov.au or Troy Gardiner troy.gardiner@education.vic.gov.au for more information on the PLC supports listed below.
Term one has seen Bacchus Marsh Primary School, Bacchus Marsh College, Canadian Lead Primary School and Beaufort Secondary School engage in coaching provided by Cambridge Education. The focus was identified by the individual schools and included a refreshing of the inquiry cycle, use of assessment, development of teams though collaborative practice, and engaging in important conversations to develop respectful challenge. Next term we have Ballarat North Primary School and Haddon Primary School begin their coaching.
As we look deeply into developing great PLC practice, we find that reflection on the principles of PLCs is effective when considered around what we know ought to be tight in our PLCs and what can be loose according to context.
Please join us onsite or online for existing PLC practices and how to deepen them in CHA.
A 20 minute PL session on the difference between a teacher puzzle of practice and the student centered learning problem.
Where these two ideas fit within the cycle? How do we support teams with collaborative tools?
A 30 minute focus on a puzzle of practice for leaders on school context based practice challenges using a consultancy protocol.
Afternoon tea provided onsite if you wish to join us in the Gariwerd room in the Ballarat Regional Office.

PLC Core Professional Learning
Currently we have six of our Central Highlands Area primary schools who are completing their modules 6, 7 & 8 of the Core Professional Learning, designed to support school's development and/or implementation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
This professional learning provides sustained Middle Leadership development with a focus on building culture through collaboration, data literacy with an inquiry mindset. It provides an opportunity for a scaffolded inquiry to support a PLC rollout across your school.
We will shortly be looking for EOI for Intake 6 schools for 2022.
See our Tight, but Loose PLC reflection Tool to support your PLC into the future.
PLC Coaching in 202 1
So far this year we have had eight of our Central Highland's schools participate in PLC coaching provided free of charge - with CRTs subsidised!
These schools have been able to choose their own focus and work with PLC consultants from Cambridge University and the PLC Manager on either a 1, 2 or 3 day intensive coaching program.
Comments from CHA school principals and leaders involved around the benefits of the coaching include:
It is a fantastic opportunity to support the development of middle leadership.
We can never get enough coaching / support!
Gathering perspectives around PLC processes and practice in our school context.
Accessing resources to support PLC effectiveness.
The people were were connected with did an excellent job.
It was brilliant to be given TIME to work together with Leadership Staff to increase their skills and understanding. Also working alongside another school was brilliant! It gave both schools opportunities to share best practices and also to visit each other's schools as the Coaching Days alternated at each school.
Schools engaged told us that the coaching provided support with:
Growth on the PLC Maturity Matrix.
AIP Key Implementation Strategies.
Development of our PLC/Instructional/Middle leaders.
A more rigorous implementation of the Improvement Cycle.
The great news is - PLC coaching will also be available for schools in 2022 through an EOI for schools who have completed their Core Professional Learning previously. School leaders and principals will also be sharing their reflections on PLC coaching at Networks in Term 4, 2021.
Please contact Paula Sprague at paula.sprague@education.vic.gov.au if you are interested in this exciting opportunity.
