The MYLNS initiative provides intensive teaching support to government secondary school students who are at risk of finishing school without the literacy and numeracy skills they need for future work and study.
This initiative seeks to support and build on the work that schools are already doing to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes for all students, by providing additional teaching support to prioritised students as part of a whole-school approach.
Funding is provided for secondary schools to release teachers as Numeracy and/or Literacy Improvement Teachers to work directly with students, and to build the capability of other teachers to address the literacy and numeracy needs of students at their school. Funding is allocated to schools based on the number of eligible students, identified by their Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN results.
In 2019, Year 10 students were prioritised for support; in 2020, Year 10 and 11 students are prioritised for support; in 2021, Year 8 and 10 students are prioritised for support; and in 2022 Year 8, 9 and 10 students are prioritised for support.
Students who are below the national minimum standard (NMS) in NAPLAN reading or numeracy, and students who were exempt from sitting NAPLAN in their previous year of schooling, are eligible to be considered for this support.
Detailed implementation guidance for schools is available on the Guidance tab.
The published MYLNS Implementation Guide is available on the Resources tab.
