Learn about and integrate artists’ practices that explore the concept of TRANSFORMATION in their material and conceptual practice. This will inform your artmaking for Term 4.

Documents experiments into a variety of mark making activities – photographed and titled presented in your digital VAD, demonstrating all requirements on the checklist. (4.1 Practice)
Traditional Chinese Ink Painting – in ‘faux Asian aesthetic artwork inspired by Qi Baishi or traditional Chinese ink paintings. (4.6 Resolution)
New English Calligraphy Script
- Applies a range of ink values to render a New English Calligraphy Script inspired by artist Xu Bing. (4.6 Practice)
- Incorporates and renders ‘faux Asian motifs’, including a shape and seal to enhance an authentic traditional Chinese Ink Painting. (4.6 Resolution)
Visual Arts Diary 5%
Researches – contemporary artist’s material and conceptual practice and creates a visual/written plan for Term 4 artmaking ianspired by the artist. (4.7 Practice)
Learn about and apply calligraphic mark making with ink, brush and water. Demonstrate proper use of materials and organisation/cleaning of equipment.

Practice Chinese Ink Painting of a variety of subject matter showing tonal and mark variation.
Devise authentic NEC Alphabet in your Visual Arts Diary
Select Appropriate Quote/Phrase and paint using NEC in Visual Arts Diary
Plan and create resolved artwork incorporating NEC Calligraphic Quote + Ink Painted subject matter.
Document process, final artwork + reflection in VAD and submit Week 9 Thursday to the LMS.

Artmaking Activity NEC
Rewrite the two NEC alphabets as shown in your physical VAD.
Your teacher will provide you with the two templates to recreate the NEC in using ink.
Please paste these in your VAD before you set up so as to not get them lost.

Write your name in NEC.
Write 4 different versions of Your Name using Xu Bing’s NEC method in your VAD.
STEPS
Using a pencil - divide your page into four equal parts.
In each of the parts draw in a very light pencil - two equally sized squares (approx 5cm) in a vertical arrangement - one on top of the other.
The top box is for your first name the lower box is for your surname.
Observe and apply Xu Bing’s ‘letter order guide’ - shown top right of this page.
Use ink and brushes to experiment and practice applying the different types of NEC letters.
Experiment with different letter arrangements for both your first and surname.
Enlarge your name to fill an entire page in your VAD.
Centre vertically and horizontally.
Artmaking
Create an ART QUOTE in the
New English Calligraphy Style.
Select or create a short 5-7 word quote
based on the theme of
Art or Transformation.
Identify the name of the Author.
Create your NEC script for your QUOTE.
Each word should fill the entire space of a 5 x 5cm square

Consider the number of words you have in your NEC SCRIPT.
You may have one OR two rows of NEC words

Use the templates in the tray at the front of the teachers room to assist you with aligning your real NEC Script and penciling in the Red Shape and where your Red Stamp will go.

In your VAD create a scale of ink from white to black using a minimum of 4 values.
When applying the ink use 4 ink VALUE variations using different ink washes
1. Black
2. Dark grey
3. Light Grey – mix with water
4. White – leave empty

7VA Use the Chinese Seal Generator to create a seal to go in the red stamp area of your NEC Script.

Find your Chinese Name. Don't have a Chinese name? Try the Chinese name tool i.e Ka te = 卡特
Then copy the characters and select your seal type. the select 'Carve' and download.
Take a screenshot and upload this onto your digital VAD.
Draw this ‘seal’ in your VAD.
Render the seal on your NEC using a red pen.
