How can I transform the appearance of text to create meaning?
WORD PLACEMENT & creating the background
LI: Explore the concept of a portrait exploring non-traditional portraits with a focus on artists that use text to capture portraits in words.
SC: Create a PIW on paper that reflects a sophisticated understanding of abstract text, colour and compositional techniques and skills.
Locate your KEY WORD LIST from previous lesson
By planning on a piece of paper, you need to consider how you would like to visually represent each key word. The font will need to be descriptive.
Your teacher may ask you to do this digitally.
Think about the relationship between the size/font, with the meaning of the word.
Consider line, direction, size, shape, colour, tone, texture, space.
Jon Campbell 2014
Look at this text work by Mira Schendel. The variety of text size/font/placement is excellent, but for your task, you will need to create a colour background.
HSC BODY OF WORK using TEXT https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/art/insideartexpress/2025/sam-polifroni/
•The background of the artwork needs to be entirely covered in colour (no white paper showing through)
•You can use watercolour, paint, colour pencil, collage pattern paper, to build up texture and colour.
•There should be a variety on the page, with a REFINED colour palette. (2-4 colours MAXIMUM).
•The only thing that can be white is some of the text, if you use white paint!
