Area – Area versus perimeter
You will need:
pencils
a workbook or paper
Create a fort at home. Try out different areas and perimeters to make the best fort possible with the same size pillows.
Hint! If you can't build a fort, imagine you have 12 pillows to build a fort and create a drawing of the fort instead.
Investigate the smallest and largest area of the fort. Record your thinking.
What if you had 36 square pillows? Record the perimeters and areas of all the possible forts you could make.
Area – Bigfoot
You will need:
pencils
a workbook or paper
scissors
measuring tools (e.g. tape measure or ruler)
outlines of an adult’s shoe (see example below)
Big foot
Using the outline of an adult’s shoe, find how many pairs of shoes would be needed to cover a square metre.
Hint! You could use two shoe outlines to make a tile and measure with the tile.Make a prediction about how many tiles will cover a square metre. Record your thinking.
Measure 1 square metre and use your tile to solve the problem:
How many pairs of shoes would be needed to cover a square metre?
Example – shoe ready to be outlined
Example – shoe next to its outline
Little foot
Choose the person with smallest shoe in your house and make an outline and then a tile of their shoe.
Make a prediction about how many tiles will cover a square metre. Record your thinking.
