List some items from around the house that are large but don’t weigh much.

Record what unit and what device you would use to measure the mass of each.

Let’s investigate how many loaves of bread can be packed into a box that measures 1 cubic metre. This will help the bread distributor organise their deliveries to supermarkets.
Note: The box is a cube and each edge is 1 metre. Remember, if you haven't got a loaf of bread, use the measurements 10cm x 10cm base and 25cm height.
Start by making a drawing of one layer of loaves of bread to find how many loaves can be arranged to fit an area of 1 square metre.
Use this information and the heights to calculate the number of layers.

mob – a group of kangaroos
mammal – animals that are covered in fur and give birth to live babies
marsupial – native Australian mammals that have a pouch
joey – the babies of a marsupial.
