Trial Focus

Term 4 2020: Blairmount Public School chose for their trial staff to engage with the learning goals feature of the software. They chose to focus on Creating Texts, which was an existing school focus area and staff had experience with the Literacy Progressions content for this area. Trial teachers explored the best way to embed learning goals in Linc-Ed Hero into their teaching in preparation for 2021. Trial teachers were also encouraged to empower small groups of students to engage with the software to post evidence of learning, tag current learning goals and self-allocate goals, with teacher support.

Term 1 2021:

Blairmount Public School chose to focus on:

  • Tracking & monitoring learning goals for Understanding Texts.

During the first mentoring/coaching sessions with the i See Learning Project Facilitator, staff were:

    • Investigating with teachers & leaders how Hero can support existing pedagogy and systems, such as InitialLit, streamed reading lessons and coaching projects.

    • Exploring the features of Hero with Stage 2 & 3 classes, discussing how they could be successful and posting this on their English page.

    • Utilising differentiated group learning goals with K-2 class teachers to support explicit & targeted questioning in reading.

    • Determining a process for stage leaders to utilise Hero as a catalyst for reflective practice in Learning Sprint sessions with their teams, particularly focused on the use of evidence & exemplars.

Term 2 2021:

During mentoring/coaching sessions with the i See Learning Project Facilitator, staff within and beyond the trial group were focused on:

  • Allocating challenging group learning goals aligned with stage focus areas & student needs.

  • Exploring how to embed learning goals and student reflective practices in existing program structures.

  • Interpreting student data to determine achievements and next steps.

  • Starting the monitoring of learning goals for Creating Texts with some classes.

  • Planning structure and organisation for Aboriginal cultural goals.

  • Teaching a core group of students how to use Hero so they can train other students.

  • Supporting students to upload evidence of learning to match their current learning goals.

  • Building student agency with some students to choose their next learning goal.

  • Explicitly teaching students how to reflect on their learning goal achievement.

  • Reviewing evidence of learning with students as a catalyst for student reflective practice.

In the future, Blairmount Public School will explore:

  • Posting to the Behaviour, Parent Contact & Wellbeing pages.

  • Completing assessments for Running Records, PAT Maths, PAT Reading & the Phonological Awareness Diagnostic.

Professional Learning for Staff

2020: During initial training days, trial staff were given weekly and fortnightly time off-class in small groups during Spirals of Inquiry. Ongoing support was continued during this time dedicated to reflective practice.

2021: All staff were given access to trial Hero for learning goals and received training on Staff Development Day in Term 1. Ongoing support was focused on building the capacity of the wider leadership team and the 2020 trial teachers to provide regular professional learning to staff through fortnightly Learning Sprints sessions, where applicable.
