First impressions
Overview
When viewing a work, you must remember that your first impression will be subjective. This means that your opinion of the work will be based on your personal thoughts, feelings and preferences. This is part of the process of appreciating all artforms. As an audience member your own background will influence your opinion.
It is important to be mindful of being too subjective. If you place too much emphasis on your own mood and personal taste, your impression of the work could become overly judgmental. It is necessary to frame the work based on its sociohistoric context before making an assessment of its worth and merit.
