在 21 世纪，由于科技的日新月异，很多传统的行业受到很大的冲击，其中新闻工作者就是一个明显的例子。

过去，很多专业记者都为大型的新闻企业工作，到处采访新闻。市民透过购买报纸、订阅杂志和新闻网络，资助这些新闻企业的运作。可是，新款手机的出现却大大减轻了专业记者的存在价值。原因很简单，最新的手机具有电话、拍摄、上网等多种功能，市民可以随时拍摄到新闻现场的影像，然后传送视频资讯到网站；或从网站下载视频资讯到手机。这样，一个新的社会角色——公民记者——开始出现。市民可以直接参与制作新闻的内容，而传统的专业记者再也不是唯一的新闻提供者。换句话说，新闻这一专业已变成了人人可以主动参与的公共资讯事务。人们这样互相传送免费新闻的内容，难免严重地影响了传统传媒的生存空间。

传统的新闻从业人员非常注重新闻的正确性与客观性，但市民发放的新闻内容，往往是不够客观和理性的。他们一般只重视新闻的新鲜感和刺激性，完全没有考虑新闻资讯对市民素质的培育。可是这些新闻却经常吸引广大的观众，令他们放弃观看传统的新闻节目。

还有，由于不少市民把拍摄到的资讯传送到网站，因此，提供新闻的小型网站相继出现，冲击着大型的新闻企业。令我们担忧的是，长此下去，理性的专业新闻报导会不会没有立足之地呢？
