Apple provide a Family Sharing service that allows for sharing and control of Apple devices and services for family members, especially the younger ones. The only way to setup an Apple account for a anyone under 13 is through Family Sharing. One adult in your family invites all the other members to join and sets up accounts for anyone under 13. Once family members join, Family Sharing is set up on everyone’s devices automatically. The group then chooses which services and features they’d like to use and share. With Family Sharing, you can create an Apple ID for your child. This allows them to participate in Family Sharing and use other Apple services. Follow the steps below:
Go to Settings > [your name]. If you're using iOS 10.2 or earlier, go to Settings > iCloud.
Tap Set Up Family Sharing, then tap Get Started
To participate in Family Sharing, all family members must have their own Apple ID. Children under 13 can't create an Apple ID on their own. However, the family organiser can create an Apple ID on their child's behalf. If your child already has an Apple ID, you can add it to your family group and update their email address, date of birth, security questions, and more. If your child does not yet have an Apple ID, follow the steps below:
Go to Settings > [your name] > Family Sharing > Add Family Member > Create a Child Account > Next.
Enter your child's birthday and tap Next. Be sure to enter the correct date — you can't change it later.
Review the Parent Privacy Disclosure and tap Agree.
Enter the requested information for your payment method and tap Next. If you don't have a payment method on file, you need to add one.
Enter your child's name, tap Next, then create their Apple ID (username@icloud.com) and tap Next. Tap Create.
Follow the onscreen instructions to set a password, choose security questions, and set up your child's account. Choose passwords and security questions that you can both remember.
Turn on Ask to Buy to approve all iTunes Store, Apple Books, and App Store purchases initiated by your child. You are responsible for all charges to your account. Tap Next.
Review the Terms and Conditions. Tap Agree.
Screen Time can give you a better understanding of how much time your kids spend using apps, visiting websites, and on their devices overall. When you use Screen Time with Family Sharing, you can review your kids’ activity reports and set time limits for specific apps right from your own device. You can also name another family member as a parent/guardian, so that you’re always on the same page when it comes to your kids and their screen time.
As organiser of Family Sharing, you also have the ability to schedule a block of time to limit when your child's device can't be used or when specific apps will always be available.
