At Anzac Park Public School, we implement a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program to reconceptualise learning to prepare students to be active, contributing citizens in a 21st century society and economy. Recognising digital literacy as a vital component of the curriculum, Anzac Park consistently delivers high quality programs enriched by 1:1 access to technology through our Stage 2 and 3 BYOD program.
The NSW Department of Education’s research into BYOD programs states: ‘The use of personal mobile devices at school will deepen learning, will be personalised and student-centered, and will meet the expectations of teachers, students, parents and caregivers’. Anzac Park Public School’s BYOD program also targets the National Curriculum’s expectation that ‘schools are required to assist students to develop their 21st Century learning skills through providing regular access to technology’.
Our BYOD programs are strictly used for learning while students are at school. Students must be given permission to use their devices and this must be to enhance learning. Students are not provided 'free time' on iPads, and cannot use their iPads before or after school, or during recess and lunch breaks.
Teachers at Anzac Park Public School recognise that iPads are just one pedagogical tool at their disposal. It is crucial that students gain the skills to use a wide range of tools to become confident and active citizens of the 21st Century.
In classrooms, there continues to be an emphasis on handwriting and book work, students continue to have hands-on visual arts and music experiences, and concrete manipulatives are still used to help children understand new mathematical concepts.
By providing students with one-to-one access to iPads, the school ensures that students' time using technology is meaningful and rich.
