Junior SRC

Rationale

The Junior SRC is comprised of an elected group of students from Years 2, 3 and 4. Its purpose is to foster student agency, promote the views of the students in grades K to 4 and increase student participation in school decision-making. It aims to suggest and implement ways to improve school spirit and the school experience for students and encourage ideals of community service and social justice.

Objectives

The Junior SRC program aims to:

  • develop students’ leadership skills including initiating, communicating, problem-solving, negotiating, collaborating, thinking creatively and critically and organising;

  • promote improvement in the school and its community;

  • select a charitable organisation relevant to the student body and support it through fundraising;

  • provide authentic opportunities for students with leadership potential to facilitate their talent development.

Selection Process

At the commencement of the school year, students in each class in Years 2, 3 and 4 elect two SRC leaders as their representatives. (SRC leaders may represent their peers a maximum of two times in four years).

What will each session look like?

SRC leaders meet fortnightly on Thursday afternoons. During the SRC meetings, the leaders participate in activities designed to further enhance their highly-developed leadership skills. They collaboratively develop and implement an action plan for a project intended to enhance the school and its community and/or to support a charity or social justice initiative.

Benefits of the program

For the school and its students, the benefits of the Junior SRC include:

  • the improvement of the student experience and the school environment through the actions of the SRC leaders;

  • the fostering of student agency through the leaders’ advocacy and representation of their peers.

For the SRC leaders, the benefits of participation in the Junior SRC include:
