Maths Olympiad

About

The contest involves solving word problems using known problem-solving strategies which further assists students to gain confidence and understanding of how to read and interpret challenging word problems. Students engage in higher order Maths problem solving, where they learn to establish a range of critical and creative thinking skills to solve the problems.

Although students are competing against other members of their class and teams from other schools, they are primarily competing against themselves. As each of the contests is a month apart, there is plenty of time for practice and improvement.

Selection Process

There are multiple ways of being selected in the Maths Olympiad Team, these are:

Achieving high results in report cards and assessments. Teachers track student results through a variety of consistent measurable means; Teacher selection for exposure. This is based on observational data gathered by teachers; and Caregiver’s letter of request. If the caregiver would like their child to participate in the Maths Olympiad, a letter of request would need to be lodged through the front office/ classroom teacher, stating the reason they should be included.

What will each  session  look like?

Maths Olympiad consists of five separate contests held approximately one month apart between May and September.  Each test will run for 30 minutes where students will be challenged with a range of problem-solving skills to solve questions. Developmental session will be held fortnightly to increase exposure and capacity of each individual.
