BHNPS News Team

About

The BHNPS News Teams offer students the opportunity to be part of the production of a fortnightly news broadcast. The completed broadcast is linked to the schools learning hub for viewing. Students in the teams have the opportunity to excel in a given field of video production including script writing, filming, hosting, reporting, and editing to produce a high quality and informative video bulletin for all students to view as well as the greater community.

Selection Process

Students in years 4-6 are asked to provide a formal expression of interest (E.O.I.) in a form that highlights their skills for a certain role in the News Team. Students are then selected on their E.O.I. to fill the required positions. Two teams of students are selected to allow adequate time for each team to produce a professional broadcast. Each team consists of 1 producer (and an apprentice where applicable), 5 reporters. 4-5 camera and sound operators, 2-3 editors, 1-2 script writers.

What does the program look like?

Teams meet once a week with supporting teachers. In these meetings, format and structure are discussed as well as progress of the upcoming broadcast. Jobs are allocated by the producer and posted on a News team Google classroom. Students are required to check this communication platform to know when they are required to film a segment. Filming takes place at recess, lunch or during another time that is available. Students are always supervised by a supporting teacher when filming. It is the student’s responsibility to forward filmed segments to the editors and then to Mrs Mashiah for compilation and uploading.

Benefits of the program

The program offers opportunities to gifted writers, speakers, videographers and editors. Skills are broadened as students learn new editing and speaking techniques unique to news broadcasts.

Student’s collaboration and communication skills are enhanced as they work in a team. Students are encouraged to engage audiences through both imaginative and news type segments.
