What are STLP Projects?

STLP Projects are more than a school assignment -- they're student-powered missions to solve real problems using technology, creativity, and teamwork.

Across Kentucky, thousands of students are designing apps, launching campaigns, building tech tools, and creating change in their schools and communities -- all through the STLP Project Cycle.

These Projects aren't cookie-cutter or one-size-fits-all. Every STLP Project starts with a question or challenge that matters to the students behind it. From that spark, students plan their path, build solutions, imporve along the way, and tell the story of what they've accomplised.

Along this journey, students are building real-world skills in leadership, collaboration, communication, and digital innovation -- all while engaging the KY Academic Standards (KAS) for Technology, Library Media, and Computer Science with an easy overlay to most district visions of a "portrait of a learner."

Why STLP Projects Matter

  • They're Student Led - driven by curiosity, passion, and purpose.

  • They're Technology Rich - blending digital tools with creativity and problem solving.

  • They're Authentic -  tackling real challenges in schools, communities, and beyond.

  • They're Fun and Flexible - no two projects look the same... and that's the point!

Whether you're coding a website, designing an accessibilty tool, creating digital art for presentations, making a social impact, or launcing a mental health podcat (all components of real past projects), your STLP Project is a chance for students to lead their own learning -- and make it count on an entirely different level.

Your idea matters. Your voice matters.

8 Elements of High Quality STLP Projects

-1-
Challenge Problem

Projects are wrapped around a meaningful problem to solve or a question to answer. This challenge problem/question is identified by the students.

-2-
Sustainable Exploration

Projects are an active process which sees students generate new questions and find/use new resources to develop their own solutions.

-3-
Student Voice & Choice

Projects encourage students to make choices about what they create and how time is used, with guidance from their STLP Coaches and collorative mentors.

-4-
Technology Focused

Projects heavily rely on technology to address the challenge problem/question. Utilizing technology is at the core of the STLP Project Cycle.

-5-
Team Reflection

Project provides opportunities before/between STLP events for reflection on design and implementation. Use STLP rubrics and resources as guides.

-6-
Addresses Standards

All STLP categories (including the entire Project Cycle) leverage the Kentucky Academic Standards with a focus on Technology, Computer Science, and Library standards.

-7-
Presentation Experience

Projects are a spotlight for students to demonstrate what they learn and created by presenting their work publically to peers, collaborators, and adult audiences.

-8-
Vibrant Learning

Projects are an opportunity for teams to experience the spark of curiosity, exploration, motivation, and engagment. STLP is learning that matters to students.
