LPS Teachers, wishing you a great 25-26 School Year!
The Occupation-Based Teacher Certification process allows Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers in Kentucky to achieve professional certification while teaching. Teacher certification is provisionally renewed on a year-to-year basis until all education requirements and the New Teacher Institute (NTI) are completed.
The New Teacher Institute (NTI) is a 24-month induction program designed to support occupation-based CTE teachers in Kentucky as they work toward professional certification.
Program Structure:
Combines face-to-face meetings, online sessions, and field-based support.
Teachers progress as a cohort, fostering networking and peer support.
Includes mentoring from experienced CTE teachers during the first portion of the program.
The second portion involves the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP), which includes classroom supervision, guidance, and assessment from veteran educators.
Eligibility:
Must have an offer of employment from a Kentucky school district, KDE, or the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS).
To enroll in NTI, teacher candidates must meet the following criteria:
Employment: Be employed as a CTE teacher in Kentucky and accepted into KDE's NTI program.
Education: Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
Work Experience:
Have four (4) years of relevant occupational experience in the desired certification area.
At least two (2) years of this experience must be within the last five (5) years.
Up to one (1) year of experience may be substituted by completing an occupation-based educator preparation program.
Teachers can earn up to 12 college credits from the University of Louisville’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) as part of NTI. These courses enhance NTI instruction and can be applied toward pre- or post-baccalaureate requirements.
Course Sequence:
Fall Term Year 1:
Class 1: Introduction to CTE Teaching and Learning
Class 2: Instructional Planning and Strategies
Spring Term Year 1:
Class 3: Classroom Assessment
Class 4: Classroom Management
Courses may be taken for credit hours or professional development. Candidates seeking credit must apply to UofL as a non-degree student.
CTE teachers employed by Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) may qualify for a CTE Tuition Waiver under KAR 2:020. To apply, complete the Tuition Waiver Form available on the Kentucky Tech Principals' Resource Page.
These Facebook groups provide essential NTI updates and offer a supportive space to connect with your cohort, share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate on best practices.
Please join both!!
