We pride ourselves on being a caring community where all young people can RISE to be their best and our core values of Respect, Inclusion, Success and Effort permeate our school community.
School Uniform Guidelines for August 2025
At Dunbar Grammar School, we are committed to fostering a strong, inclusive and aspirational learning environment. As part of this, we are introducing an updated uniform guidance from August 2025, which aligns with our core RISE values – Respect, Inclusion, Success, and Effort – and supports our vision for all young people to Be Their Best.
The refreshed uniform aims to:
• Promote equity and affordability
• Strengthen school identity and pride
• Support our House system through visible representation via coloured house badges
• Reinforce a culture of high expectations and mutual respect
We’ve been consulting extensively with pupils, parents, carers and staff since November 2024 through assemblies, surveys, focus groups, parent evenings, and pupil/parent council meetings. We are grateful for the constructive feedback and have ensured that affordability and flexibility are key priorities in this transition.
New Uniform Guidelines
Transition Period
2025–26 will be a transition year. Pupils may continue wearing previous years’ plain black jumpers that meet dress code expectations if needed. Full implementation will be reviewed with the community in due course.

S5–S6 Dress Code

• Optional jumper, hoodie, zippie or ¼ zip
Bottom Half:
• Smart black trousers/black jeans, skirt and tights, thick leggings, or smart black shorts

Ordering information
Families are welcome to order jumpers, hoodies and ¼ zips directly through the Dunbar T-Shirt Shop, High Street, Dunbar. Items are made to order and can be purchased via the following link www.dunbartshirt.com . Each pupil will have the option to wear their school house badge – Winterfield (White), Lauderdale, Castle or Victoria. This helps foster a sense of belonging and house spirit while promoting achievement and friendly competition. Additionally, families may also buy any of the uniform from local supermarket which would not include the school badge.
Affordability & Support
We understand that cost can be a concern. We’ve made significant efforts to reduce expense:
• The jumper is the only optional branded item
• The branded polo shirt from previous years have been removed
• Items are available locally through the supermarkets or the T-Shirt Shop, Dunbar High Street, made to order. We’ve contacted the local Asda to ensure they are aware of the switch to navy.
• We encourage reuse and recycling of uniform items wherever possible
In addition, families may be eligible for the school Uniform Grant through the east Lothian Council. You can find full information and apply online at: https://www.eastlothian.gov.uk/uniform grants
For those who require further assistance, please contact the school directly and confidentially. We are here to support and have additional funding opportunities to provide uniform for families.
We ask for your support in upholding our uniform guidelines, which not only reflect our values but also create a positive and respectful school culture.
Ties can be purchased from the school office for £7.50, all other uniform is available from Dunbar T-Shirt Shop

Dunbar Grammar School Council (DGSC) and Parent Council
The School Council meets regularly to share information and discuss school issues. The Council includes: the Head Teacher, Senior Leadership Team and teacher representatives, student representatives, community representatives and Parent Council members. Parent Council members are there to represent all members of the Parent Forum. This is a term used in Scotland meaning all parents and carers with young people attending the school.
The Parent Council is an independent group with statutory responsibilities and rights laid out in the 2016 Parental Involvement Act.
We aim to connect all parents and carers with the school. We are here to support the school improve all young people’s educational experience. The more parents and carers involved with the Parent Council the better we can help support the school.
We encourage parents and carers to ask questions and suggest discussion topics. Examples include: behaviour, Google Classroom, mobile phones in school, and homework.
We are always keen to hear from new parents and carers. We cannot be involved with anything specific to individuals, please contact the school directly. However, we can support and engage with wider concerns and issues. The Parent Council is supported by Connect, the organisation that represents parent groups at a national level https://connect.scot/
We aim to alternate in person and online meetings. All meetings are 7-8.30pm and take place on different days of the week. In person meetings are in school, you will be welcomed at the main entrance, tea and coffee is provided. Online meetings take place on Google Meet, a link is sent to your email address. Contacting Staff
The school’s policy on contacting staff is to encourage parents and carers to use the school’s central telephone number or email address in the first instance. Parents should state which member of staff they would like to contact and if possible give a brief reason for the call eg if a parent wishes to speak to a student’s guidance teacher they should simply state the name of the guidance teacher and give a brief reason for the call if this is appropriate. The office staff will then re-direct calls and emails to the appropriate member of staff, in the first instance to guidance and senior management team. If possible, please give a contact number or email address to enable a speedy response.
