Senior Phase Pathway Planning
(for current S3, S4 and S5 pupils)
As you plan for the Senior Phase, you will have the option to further personalise your curriculum.
For pupils moving into S4, there is the option to study seven subjects. All students are required to study English and Mathematics at National Level for 4 periods per week.
In addition to this, all students will study 1 period of Religious and Moral Education, 1 period of Personal and Social Education and 2 periods of Physical Education.
Students will study another 5 Level 4/5 subjects in S4. This will be a free choice from a bank of different subjects. This will be a mixture of National Qualifications, NPAs and SCQF qualifications.
We would very much encourage students to consider their ‘Senior Phase’ years as a whole and plan the total bank of qualifications they would hope to attain by the time they leave school.
As pupils move into S5 and S6, there is flexibility in the number of subjects studied depending on the level of study. This can include up to seven Level 4 or 5 courses and up to five Level 6 or 7 courses.
There are several different Pathways available for S5s that can combine Level 4/5 and Level 6 qualifications.
Students will choose a pathway and then make free choices from that pathway. They will not choose from a column structure.
Depending on Pathway chosen, there is the opportunity for students to choose “Wider Achievement” qualifications which are either 1 period or 2 period courses.
This will allow young people to add to their bank of Level 4, 5 and 6 qualifications.
All S6 students will continue to take a minimum of 4 courses. S6 will be expected to choose at least one Wider Achievement course for one or two periods per week. Depending on what courses they choose we may ask them to add more to this to make sure they continue to attain to a high level in S6. This can be made up of a combination of Highers, Advanced Highers, Nationals or College courses.
In the pages below you will find a pathway for each curriculum area so that you can easily make decisions about your options of study and there is information provided about each of the subjects.
Course choices is an important part of the student experience and allows our young people to explore their areas of interest or strengths in an enriching, challenging and personalised curriculum pathway. The information below is designed to support you through this process to ensure you are able to make informed choices about your continued learning journey.
