Is it dangerous?

The element of risk is kept to an absolute minimum as we take the health and safety of participants very seriously. All expeditions are run and supervised by qualified staff. In addition to this we require that participants undergo thorough training before they take part in an expedition. Each trip is carefully assessed, and we work closely with our activity providers to ensure that help is always close by, should we need it.

Is it possible to concentrate on my studies and do the Award?

The Award takes time and commitment, so you'll need to manage your time effectively. You will be required to set aside 3 hours per week. However, thousands of students worldwide have successfully completed their Award(s), and managed to be successful in their studies. The fact is that not all learning takes place inside the classroom, and it is essential that you have experiences away from the classroom.

How do I decide which activities to choose?

Choose something you truly enjoy doing and which you will remain motivated to complete and something which is easy to access (such as close to your home or to school). And speak to your Award Leader!

Can I do the Silver without completing Bronze?

No, you first need to complete your Bronze Award, which is open to anybody older than 14 years of age.

How can I help as a parent?

  • Help ensure that their activity choices they are exciting, but realistic for your budget, transport and local facilities.
  • Remind them to keep gathering their evidence, e.g. photographs/certificates, and uploading it to the ORB.
  • Every student needs to find an Assessor to sign off each DofE section. The Assessor can be anyone who knows about or organises the activity. It might be the sports instructor, art teacher, club or volunteering event organiser. It cannot be a family member.
  • As their programme comes to an end you can remind them to make sure their Assessors write their reports so that they can complete the section.
  • Ensure they include their DofE involvement and achievements in their CV.
