Mission:

Om 20.02 uur steeg Vickers Wellington X9920 "FH-?" van 15 Operational Training Unit op van Harwell in graafschap Berkshire om deel te nemen aan een aanval op Essen. Om 00.12 uur werd de Wellington neergeschoten door een Duitse nachtjager en crashte nabij de Westerweg bij Heiloo. 

De bemanning, bestaande uit piloot W. J. Nobbs, tweede piloot T. J. Fraser, waarnemer/bommenrichter J. H. Stirk, radiotelegrafist D. Miller, neuskoepelschutter F. K. Seals en staartkoepelschutter R. G. Ware, kwam om het leven en werd op Bergen begraven.

Flight sergeant (commonly abbreviated to Flt Sgt, F/Sgt, FSGT or, currently correctly in the RAF, FS) is a senior non-commissioned rank in the Royal Air Force and several other air forces which have adopted all or part of the RAF rank structure. It is equivalent to a staff sergeant or colour sergeant in the British Army, a colour sergeant in the Royal Marines, and a chief petty officer in the Royal Navy, and has a NATO rank code of OR-7. In the RAF, flight sergeant ranks above chief technician and below warrant officer. 

De Vickers Wellington was een tweemotorige Britse bommenwerper, ontworpen tijdens de jaren dertig door Vickers-Armstrongs. Dit vliegtuigtype werd tijdens de beginjaren van de Tweede Wereldoorlog als nachtbommenwerper gebruikt, totdat het in deze rol vervangen werd door zwaardere viermotorige bommenwerpers, zoals de Avro Lancaster. Hierna werd het toestel voornamelijk ingezet in de strijd tegen Duitse duikboten. Het was de enige Britse bommenwerper die de hele oorlog lang geproduceerd werd. Uiteindelijk werden er ruim 11.000 geproduceerd, in meerdere varianten.
