Sample Daily Schedule

Create a schedule for the week, and work through the content below at your own pace. You can do a little from each area each day, or theme days of the week and focus only on one or two areas per day.

English Language Arts & Literacy

Learning Goal:

  • I can self-select texts and read independently for an extended period of time
  • I can think critically about the texts I read
  • I can read and analyze a variety of texts
  • I can create my own research questions to find information about a specific topic

Estimated Time for The Week: 90 minutes or 1.5 hours

Learn & Practice:

  1. Follow this presentation to complete the following learning activities for week 1.
  2. Prepare to make a summer reading plan.
  3. Explore the suggested books.
  4. Choose several books that look interesting and make a Top Three list of titles.
  5. Discover the background of the book including its setting and historical events of that time
  6. Investigate as you read and look up words, events, cultures and traditions that occur in the book.
  7. Reflect on the book when you are finished, using the suggested questions to guide you.
  8. Share the book you read with someone.
  9. Extend your enjoyment by finding a book on a similar topic or one that was written by the same author.

Learning Goal: Identify and evaluate methods that increase biodiversity.

Project Directions:

  • You have learned a lot about geography over the course of the year. This project allows you to showcase everything you know by creating a fictional country.
  • You’ll apply the ideas of physical and human geography to create your own country.
  • You can be as CREATIVE as you want! (You can make slides, videos, posters, or 3D models with clay!)

Learn & Practice:

  1. Make sure you're logged into Discovery Education with your school account.
  2. Click here for your DE Studio Board: Media Strategy Analyst on the career of a Media Strategy Analyst that will guide you through the below directions.
  3. The Studio Board will guide you as you learn about the requirements to become a Media Strategy Analyst and their salary.
  4. Background: Creating a hit new show for TV isn’t about just finding a good idea, it’s about looking at trends in the market and pop culture. When pitching a new show idea, having evidence and data gives you a strong foundation in order to communicate your ideas effectively. You will take on the role of a Media Strategy Analyst developing ideas for a new show. You will examine current media trends in viewership to come up with a pitch for the next hit show for Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, or Science Channel!
  5. Challenge: You will create a pitch for a new show. You will need to identify which of the three networks it will air on and why you have selected that network. You must include data and evidence in your pitch including:
    • The current trends in what people are interested in watching, based on ratings, AND/OR
    • Your prediction of the next big trend, based on the data you have collected about pop culture.
  6. Explore: Review TV and media data to gather ideas and trends in entertainment.
  • Share:
    • Create a visual presentation (poster, Board Builder, PowerPoint, etc.) to pitch your show idea to your boss.
    • Include rationale and evidence for your show idea.
  • Extend Learning:
    • Use Discovery Education Board Builder to develop clips and ideas for your shows episodes.
    • Use DiscoveryEducation.com Streaming Plus or Techbook for video clip examples.
    • Create your own video – 30-second show commercial/preview as part of the presentation.
