Week 5: May 4-8

Learning Goal:

I can research, identify important information about a particular subject, and create an infographic displaying that information.

Estimated Time for The Week:

1-2 hours, 60-120 minutes

Type of Lesson:

Infographic

Materials:

Chromebook or device with Internet access

Learn & Practice:

  1. Infographics are visual representations of knowledge and information that are designed to make complex ideas and large amounts of data easy to understand. There are many ways to create infographics. After exploring a variety of examples, you will create your own infographic poster that will help others better understand an issue or concept you are studying.
  2. Explore Infographic Examples:
  3. Watch “Beauty of Data Visualization” TED Talk by David McCandless.
  4. Reflect on what you watched and saw:
    • Which infographic was the best? Why?
    • What made them interesting, content or design? Or both?
    • How did the use of fonts, color, graphics, and imagery contribute?
    • Did the design contribute to how you felt about the information?
  5. Research a topic you are passionate about. Be mindful of websites you’ll need to cite, and store that information somewhere! Take notes on what you learn/want to include in your infographic. Examples might include:
    • TikTok
    • TikTok Dances
    • Favorite restaurant chain
    • Favorite country/place to visit
    • Favorite musician
    • Potential future career
    • Athlete/sport/sport league
  6. Begin to “sketch” out your infographic. Organization and design of the poster is critical when informing others. Ask yourself:
    • Which information, facts, and data are essential to include? Which aren’t?
    • What colors and layout works best in sharing the information?
    • What graphs and graphics best convey information and data to the viewer?
    • What is the order, or flow, of information?
  7. You may want to take a moment to look back at your samples and discuss how various infographics are structured. REMEMBER: the point of an infographic is to transfer knowledge and information quickly, the final poster should be informative, simple, engaging, and design-friendly.
  8. Go to Canva.com or Adobe Spark and select a template that you can adjust that fits your information you want to portray. You can edit as needed.
  9. If you want, please share your infographic with your teacher! Share with your friends and family to have them learn about your topic!

Week 6: May 11-13

Learning Goal:

I can plan, create and effectively communicate a story using a variety of media options

Estimated Time for The Week:

60-90 minutes

Type of Lesson:

Creating a choose your own adventure story

Materials:

Chromebook

Learn & Practice:

  1. For this assignment you are going to create a story and show how different choices can have different outcomes.
  2. Think about a story where your main character will have to make a lot of choices. This story could be about surviving a zombie attack, finding a secret passage into an unknown world, or being abducted by aliens. Your topics can be about anything you find interesting that is school appropriate.
  3. Using this template, plan out your adventure. You don’t need to print this but you could if it would help.
  4. Once your plan is in place, you would go and create a new google slideshow. As you can see from the plan, you will need 25 slides.
  5. Insert the information from your planning pages onto each of your slides. You can add as much to each slide as you need to make your story come to life. You can add still pictures, videos that you create, gifs, and other animations.
  6. When you have completed your slides, you will need to go back and link the choices to their outcomes following the template. (Remember the links won’t work unless you are in present mode.) If you are unsure about how to link slides in a google slide presentation to another slide in the same presentation watch this video from about 2:30 until 3:15
  7. When you have completed the adventure, show it to the people you live with. Make sure all the links work and that the links are to the correct slide.
  8. When you are done with your project, send it to your teacher and they will go on the adventure you have made.
