Materials:

Learn & Practice:

  • Watch this read aloud about babies born in the wild! Born in the wild.
  • Discuss how our parents help us to survive.
  • Look at the elephant pictures and discuss how the parents are helping their offspring survive.
  • Use the table for a fun and engaging activity about parents and their offspring!
  • Go on a virtual field trip to the San Diego Zoo live cam. (About 10 minutes)
    • Grab a pencil and paper to document animal behaviors. Use the codes in the lesson. This will provide a way for students to observe animal patterns, behaviors, and parents caring for their young.
  • Follow up questions
    • Which behavior did you notice the most?
    • Which had the least?
    • What did you see the parent do that helps their offspring?
    • Were there patterns among the parents and the offspring?
  • Listen to the fun sing along about Baby Animals if you would like!

Learn & Practice:

  • Click on this Google Slideshow to listen to stories and play a game about needs and wants.
  • Write a grocery list of items you need and items you want
  • Additional ideas:
      • Magazine or Newspaper Hunt - Look through the newspaper or magazine to find pictures of needs and wants. Glue the pictures into two columns on a piece of paper. If you do not have a newspaper or magazine, draw 1 item you want and 1 item you need.
      • Scavenger Hunt around your house - Can you find items you need and items you want?
      • Make a list of 2 things you want and 2 things you need
      • Math Extension: What was the cost of some of your items? Can you find the total?
      • Take a picture of your wants and needs items, pictures, or list and send it to your teacher via email or SeeSaw

STEM

Learning Goal:

I can use my imagination to create and build a structure.

Learn & Practice:

  1. Listen to the book Not a Box by clicking on the title of the book.
  2. Let’s build: A “NOT” a Box!
  3. Get a cardboard box, and some art supplies
  4. Make a list of ideas for your box- can it be a rocket ship, a boat, magic carpet, race car, etc.
  5. Start creating your idea with the materials you find around your house.
