This workshop aims to empower teachers by integrating Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction (CBCI) with Generative AI (Gen AI) to enhance unit development. Moving beyond the traditional two-dimensional approach of focusing on facts and skills, CBCI introduces a three-dimensional curriculum that includes facts, skills, concepts, and generalizations. The workshop will focus on using AI to help teachers craft conceptual understandings and develop guiding questions.
Objective
The primary objective of this workshop is to equip international K-12 teachers with a deep understanding of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction (CBCI). The workshop aims to provide educators with the tools and strategies necessary to implement CBCI effectively in their classrooms. Participants will learn how to distinguish between topics and concepts, understand the structure of knowledge and process, craft powerful generalizations, and develop guiding questions using both traditional methods and customized generative AI bots.
Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
Understand the difference between topics and concepts: Teachers will be able to distinguish between topics and concepts, enhancing their curriculum planning and instruction.
Learn the Structure of Knowledge and the Struture of Process: Participants will explore Dr. Lynn Erickson’s Structure of Knowledge and Dr. Lois Lanning’s Structure of Process, understanding how these models support students in building comprehensive understanding.
Craft strong generalizations: Teachers will gain skills in crafting clear and powerful generalizations (conceptual understandings) with scaffolding thinking.
Develop guiding questions: Educators will be proficient in creating various types of guiding questions, including concept formation questions, factual questions, conceptual questions, and debate questions.
Utilize AI tools: Participants will be introduced to and learn how to use customized generative AI bots such as the Concept Criteria Bot and the Guiding Questions Bot to support their teaching practice.

This workshop is designed for international K-12 teachers who are looking to gain an introductory understanding and application of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction. It is particularly suited for educators who are committed to fostering higher-order thinking skills and deeper understanding in their students.

Intellectual development must be a major educational focus to prepare young people for the complexities of twenty-first-century living. This workshop emphasizes the importance of fostering higher-order thinking skills and the transfer of learning, ensuring students are well-equipped to navigate and thrive in a rapidly changing world. Teachers will leave equipped to create engaging and effective educational units that promote deeper understanding and intellectual growth.
Presenter Bio
Eunjee Ko is a dedicated educator and Namseoul University lecturer for the IB Educator Certificate course, with 15 years of experience as an English teacher in the Chungnam Provincial Office of Education. Contributing to the academic community as a Korean freelance translator and revisor for the IB’s MEP Department, she holds IB MYP and DP Educator certificates and an MA in teaching English as a foreign language from IGSE in Korea. She is currently taking a CBCI trainer course and will receive the certificate in July.
Focusing on the 2022 revised Korean curriculum, CBCI, and IB education, Eunjee is pursuing a doctoral program at Korea National University of Education, exploring curriculum development intricacies and teacher training aspects. A Gold Prize recipient at MELTA’s 5th MIRCELE Conference, she aspires to share valuable insights with Korean English teachers, emphasizing both curriculum reconstruction and teacher training. Eunjee is also the co-founder of TRIBE, a platform for Teacher Resources for IB Educators, providing customized chatbots and materials for IB educators."
