Students are more engaged in the classroom and school community when they are actively involved in planning, facilitating, and reflecting on activities that allow them to grow. We will reflect on how we as teachers and administrators can be more intentional in letting our students lead the learning – in all phases – to foster agency. This naturally supports development of communication, self-management and thinking skills.
Objective
Understand and apply Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) concepts in classroom activities and whole school student programming.
Outcomes
Reflect on existing pedagogy and programming to determine level of student agency
Consider areas where IBL can be integrated into existing curriculum planning & yearly programming
Move from ‘sage on the stage’ to ‘guide on the side’
Get excited about students leading their learning
Identify areas where IBL can be integrated in existing lesson plans/yearly programming
Target Audience
Teachers, Administrators, Student Affairs/Pastoral Care staff
Overview
Get ready to self-assess your teaching and leading style when it comes to working with your students in the planning process for all things connected to them.
In this workshop you will have an opportunity to analyze current trends in Inquiry Based Learning, work with peers on ways to modify existing planning (subject based as well as schoolwide student programming) and share ideas on how to empower students more in their learning experiences.
