Racism is when someone is treated unfairly, excluded, or disrespected because of their race, skin colour, ethnicity, or cultural background. It can show up in many ways—through hurtful jokes, stereotypes, name-calling, or even being denied opportunities.
In Australia, racism can affect people from First Nations communities, migrants, and anyone who looks or sounds different. It’s important to understand that racism isn’t just about personal opinions—it’s about actions and attitudes that make others feel unsafe or unwelcome.
Being respectful means standing up against racism, listening to others’ experiences, and helping create a school and community where everyone feels valued and included.
By the end of this module, students will develop an understanding of:
What racism is and how it can appear in everyday situations.
How racism affects individuals and communities, including emotional and social impacts.
What students can do to challenge racism and promote respect, inclusion, and fairness.
Students can:
identify racism in different forms (e.g. language, behaviour, exclusion)
understand how racism impacts individuals and communities
take respectful action to challenge racism and support inclusion
