New! Old MacDonald Had a Farm
I’m sure everyone will know this song. Maybe you have some toy animals at home which you can line up before you start to sing. You can also draw the animals on the farm.
New! My Pigeon House
Try flying around while singing this gentle song. At the end of the song you can fold your wings and sing ‘coo roo’ softly like pigeons do.
New! Li'l Liza and Ostinato
This is an American folk song. Liza Jane comes from Baltimore which is not very far from New York city.
The Pony Song
Imagine the fun of riding a pony ‘all around the countryside!’ While you are singing you can make the sound of the pony’s hooves by clasping your hands and tapping your palms. Jig jog, jig jog, jig a jog jig!
Down By the Banks
Enjoy singing the fun words of this song while tapping the beat. The high sounds are tricky to sing so listen carefully to the phrase that says ‘with an eep, ipe, oop, ope and a boom shardardle and a ker plop!’ Maybe you can dance while you sing and add a big finish with ‘jazz hands’.
The Shores of Botany Bay
This is a song for the older children which tells the story of a bricklayer who travelled to Botany Bay to start a new life. I wonder what the name of the ship was that brought him all the way across the ocean? Why did he come so far and what was he hoping to find?
Warm Kitty
Enjoy singing this well known song with Katharine. Maybe you can find a soft toy or even a real cat to gently pat while you sing.
Try moving like a cat or kitten. Can you stretch, arch your back and curl back into a little ball?
This Old Man/Michael Finnigan
Practise singing each of these songs until you know them very well. The challenge is to have two (or more people) sing them at the same time!
Don’t forget that you can practise your counting while you sing This Old man – ‘He played 2’, He played 3’.
Oh How Lovely is the Evening
This beautiful song can be sung as a round. The second singer/s starts after ‘Oh how lovely is the is evening, is the evening’.
Try stepping slowly with the beat through the first two phrases. You can stand still and swing your arms gently to the beat during the third phase – ‘ding, dong, ding, dong, ding, dong.’
Birdie Birdie
Sing with Katharine as she asks ‘Birdie, birdie, where’s your nest?’ The bird answers ‘Up in the tree where I love best!’ Our youngest singers may enjoy singing the melody to ‘la, la, la’ which is the second verse.
A Sailor Went to Sea
Here’s a fun song with actions. Each time Katharine sings a verse there is a new action – ‘sea, sea, sea’ or ‘chop, chop, chop’ or ‘knee, knee, knee’. For the last verse sing and do all of the actions! You might like to do the clapping pattern with a partner
Fillameeooreay
Sing along with Katharine as she tells the story of a man called Patrick who emigrated from Ireland to America in 1842. He works on the railway in Ireland and then he works on the railway in America! It’s hard work and he wears his corduroy britches (trousers) to keep himself warm. The chorus is fun to sing ‘Fillameeooreeooreay’!
The Colour Song
Sing with Katharine as she waves some coloured scarves in time to the music. Maybe you could find some coloured items to wave – perhaps a blue shirt, a yellow sock, a red jumper etc.
Rocky Mountain
Enjoy singing the song ‘Rocky Mountain’ with Katharine. Once you know the song well you can try clapping the rhythms on the cards at the same time. This is called an ostinato. Maybe you could write the rhythms out for yourself first!
Kangaroo Skippy Roo
Join in with Katharine as she sings ‘Kangaroo Skippy Roo’. Maybe you could play the game with some people in your family? Close your eyes if you are the kangaroo and listen to the mystery voice singing to you at the end of the song!
Atama Kata Hiza Ashi!
How do you sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Japanese? Well, we are about to find out! Let’s get our bodies moving with this classic nursery rhyme sung by Yui and performed by Jade.
