In today's lesson we will be doing a thorough site analysis of the bike rack area behind the canteen. You will be working in groups of 3-4 to document the site for refurbishment.
Noting existing infrastructure- not just buildings! Note the materials these are made of also
Recording traffic paths: foot and vehicle, both formal and informal
Recording gradients and slope of the land, noting drainage points and potential water catchment issues. Note the prevailing wind path (hopefully we have something to go off, but you may also need to look at some historical data)
Recording natural elements- trees, grass etc. This should include types of trees/plants and their condition
When you get back to the classroom, your group should combine your resources so that the group can complete a site analysis drawing that shows as much information as possible. You may find adding a key useful for identifying individual elements. You can do the map by hand on A3 paper or digitally.
In your groups, you will also need to research the sun path and historical climate data such as rainfall and prevailing winds to add to your map, like the examples below.
You can find historical climate data and prevailing winds at the Bureau of Meterology here: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/maps/averages/
You can find the sun path information here: https://www.suncalc.org/
You should also annotate your map with short notes about any areas of interest or concern.
You will then need to take your map and write an analysis (100 words) of this information in terms of how it may provide opportunities or challenges for a potential design. We will discuss this first as a class. The analysis will be done individually.
Make sure that you take a photograph or scan your group's map to put into your portfolio, along with your own analysis and an evaulation of the task (do this part individually).
