Create a functional, accessible and culturally focused urban park on the site of the current Calvert Park, labelled as Ainslie block 1, section 107 in the Territory Plan.
The ACT Suburban Land Agency has proposed a re-design of the existing Calvert Park site in Ainslie. Currently the block contains open space and a basic children's playground.
The directorate wishes you to include the following in your design solution:
A children's playground with accessible equipment
A range of seating for adults and children
BBQ and picnic facilities
Opportunities for physical activity and exploration for children and adults
Reference First Nations culture as well as the local environment
Your design solution will be underpinned by a sense of place as well as a deep knowledge and understanding of the local landscape within the context of Ngunnawal culture.
The principles of Biomimicry and Accessibility will inform your design solution.
Present the following components in a Google Doc.
1. Return Brief (re-write in your own words, 200 words T, 100 words A):
The return brief needs to state how you plan to address the requirements of the project, i.e. your vision for the design.
You need to specify how you will meet these requirements with an intelligent, innovative, culturally appropriate and environmentally responsible design.
Boundless Playground, Lake Burley Griffin
Pod Playground, National Arboretum
Moncrieff Community Recreation Park, Moncrieff
Ruth Park Playground, Coombs
2. Reflection of Country (150 words T, 80-100 words A):
Spend some time on the site and reflect on what it needs. We will visit the site in class during week 12.
Consider the following:
How do you feel on the site?
What are the sounds around you?
What plants and animals do you see?
Is there water?
Does the land on the site seem healthy? If not, why?
How are people using the land?
John Knight Memorial Park, Belconnen
Eddison Skate Park, Phillip
3. Site Analysis:
After the site visit in week 12 complete a thorough site analysis. Make sure you include the following:
sun path and orientation
gradient of land (contours)
site run off (drainage points)
site boundaries
existing structures
circulation within the site
Climate data- average temperatures, rainfall, prevailing winds
In your analysis you should aim to explain how each of these factors will influence and affect your design. (150 words T, 100 words A)
4. MOOD BOARD - Inspiration/Influences with annotative comments (one page):
This is a collection of pictures, drawings, words and sketches that show your vision for the project as well as your influences. You can also include images, words, photographs, wrappers, objects, poetry, stories, feelings that give your ideas. Don’t just use existing pictures of urban parks- think about colours, patterns, objects, anything that informs or inspires your ideas and overarching theme.
Concept Design (minimum of 5 pages with notes and drawings):
This is a collection of your sketches and drawings along the way to finalising your final design solution.
Initial concept sketches (done by hand on paper): these are a series of quick ideas and don’t need to be polished.
Polished concept designs: you need to complete 2 distinct concept designs. These can either be completed by hand on paper or digitally. Your polished concepts should include a plan view drawing and a perspective.
Development of your final design: following on from peer review, use the feedback you received to choose one of your concepts and develop it into a final design. This is an iterative development process with second, informal, peer review in order to gain valuable feedback on the progress of your design. Documentation of your design process is essential and you will be assessed on your design development.
Final Design Solution:
You may complete your final design by hand on paper, or digitally using Sketch Up, Revit, Blender or the Adobe Creative Suite. You may also use a combination of these.
You must submit the following:
A list of the plants (minimum 6) you have selected including price, source and a visual, AND EITHER:
An A3 plan drawing using correct landscape annotative symbols plus an A4 perspective or elevation drawing of a focal point of your design, OR
A scale model of your design on a base board of no more than 50cm x 50cm
Reflection:
200 (T) or 100 (A) words to reflect on the success of your design solution. Include the following points:
Have you achieved your vision for the project?
How have you achieved this?
How did you use the feedback you received throughout the peer review process to refine your design?
What aspects of your design are the most successful?
What aspects of the design could be improved upon, or what would you do differently were you to undertake this project again?
