In landscape design, one of the ways we can influence the way the audience interacts and moves through the space is through the use of journeys and habitats.
Journeys refers to the paths that a person might take to travel through a space.
Habitats are individual spaces within the larger space that a person can interact with.
Both of these can be used to create an engaging landscape that your audience can interact with in many different ways.
What about this one by 100architects? It's a little more abstract but the elements are definitely there.
Watch the video '7 Principles of Landscape Design' on the link below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xdz2ifgmok
The designer in this video has referred to the 7 principles of landscape design as:
Symmetry/asymmetry (balance)
Focalisation/focal point
Simplicity
Repetition
Unity
Enclosure
Proportion
Look at the landscape plan on the left.
How has the designer used the 7 landscape design principles here?
What textures can you see and what materials could they represent?
What furniture and structures can you see? How can you tell what they are?
Comment on the overall successful of the design.
Use the A3 sized plan drawing given to you (copies are in the classroom). This plan is to scale- indicated on the sheet. Assume the block is flat, and located in Canberra.
Look closely at the information you have on the plan (we will go through this as a class). This includes orientation, existing structures, location of the street, approximate size of the block etc.
Create a full colour design for this block using the 7 principles of landscape design, constructing a range of journeys and habitats for your audience to move through the site. Complete your drawing using a range of plant, softscape and hardscape symbols.
TERTIARY STUDENTS ONLY: You must also consider what you have learned from the previous NAIDOC week task about Country, place and identity, and use this to give the design a 'sense of place in Canberra'. (Accredited do not have to do this part, unless you want to).
This task will go into your portfolio. Make sure you include an evaluation and justification of your design decisions indicating how you have used the 7 principles and journeys and habitats.
