Why do we do discovery play in Kindergarten?

When student's enter the classroom in the morning they are given the opportunity to play with loose parts, planned provocations, and many other building and playing materials. This time allows students to cooperatively play together, learn how to share, take turns, and explore their personal interests. Research shows that play is extremely important in developing young student's imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength.
