Mindfulness is one of the programs we use to teach our young students the tools and techniques to help them with emotional regulation. We spend time mindfully listening, breathing, walking and being present in the moment so that when students are experiencing strong emotions they have some tools they can use to help them regulate themselves. Part of mindfulness is called heartfulness where we spend some time sending positive affirmations to special people in our lives and to ourselves. Even at this young age children are able to learn these important life long skills.
During the COVID crisis and its fallout, kids are having to deal with some very BIG emotions. Kimochi's is a family of cuddly critters that have all come with a bowl full of emotions they are learning to deal with and explore. Kimochi's is a program we use that helps students grow and transform by skillfully learning to deal with their feelings.
We teach our young students about their brains and how they have the power to control their brain. They can choose to have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. By choosing a growth mindset they can actually grow their brains and have a more positive outlook on how they learn and how they view mistakes. It is very powerful to watch our students embrace this mindset and believe they can do hard things and that it is okay to make mistakes! That is just part of learning to do new things.
